Walnut made it to the city and saw police cars lined up near an alleyway by a clothing store. she saw her dad waiting for her by his car and came up to him.
"Walnut, you're here!" he said.
"hello, Almond! what do you need me for?" she asked.
"the shooters are around here somewhere, and the police are searching for them. i don't know when they will shoot again... but i need you to investigate that store while i interrogate the witnesses and the suspects."
"alright."
"here's your magnifying glass, notepad, and pencil in case you find anything of note."
"thank you!"
"you're welcome."
once Walnut had her notepad and pencil ready, she walked inside of the clothing store.
"hello there! welcome to our stor- oh... are you involved with the investigation that's been going on?" a cashier asked.
"yes, i am!" she answered.
"good... i've seen suspicious activity at this store recently. one of the shooters threatened me with his gun! it was scary, but i was able to get through it. luckily, he didn't steal any of my money."
"that's good!"
"i'll let you go on with your investigation now."
"alright, bye!"
Walnut walked deeper within the store and saw a lot of dead bodies in the aisles. she walked around, jotting down how many there were and where they were found in case it would be helpful. while walking around, she heard the windows breaking and bullets being shot into the wall. the cashier hid behind her desk to prevent the shooters from seeing her. Walnut was getting a little concerned, but she kept going. she overheard two people talking in the break room and decided to listen in for a bit.
"oh, no, no, no, NO! i'm gonna run out of material very soon if this doesn't stop!" one of them said.
"yes... i'm starting to run out of material as well. this is tragic..." said the other.
"maybe we should just... leave!"
"keep it down, hon. they'll hear us..."
Walnut continued on and found a gray hoodie she really liked. she had enough money for it, so she took it with her. she then decided to get something for Almond, so she found a tie for him. she was done investigating the store, so she ran up to the cashier and payed for the clothes she bought.
"oh... you're buying clothes?" the cashier asked.
"yep! this hoodie stood out to me, and i wanted to buy this for my dad" Walnut told her.
"alright... but this hoodie has a small blood stain. are you sure you want to buy it?"
"it'll be fine! i can wash it once i get home."
"okay! would you like a bag?"
"no, thanks. i'll just hold it around my waist!"
"alright. thanks for buying something!"
"you're welcome! oh, and... i think you should get out."
"why? my coworkers are taking a break and there's very little people working."
"this store's in danger. i don't know what that means for you guys, but i'd hate to have you die after what i've seen earlier..."
"alright... i'll get my coworkers and leave with them."
the cashier left her desk while Walnut left the clothing store, heading towards the dark alleyway.

while walking there, Walnut saw questionable things on the ground such as drugs and condoms. she heard another gun shot, and she turned around to see Almond interrogating the clothing store workers as they were leaving. none of them were hurt, so she continued walking. she stepped into the alleyway feeling scared, but she had courage. she saw a few dead bodies laying on the ground and one in the dumpster. she was getting blood all over her shoes, but she was noting down the amount of dead bodies and their locations in her notepad. she didn't find much during her investigation which was understandable because this was just a mass shooting. she exited the back of the alleyway carefully when she heard a small click. when she walked out in the open, she could see city lights and thought it was a beautiful sight. she then started running back when she remembered the click, but it was too late. a bullet shot her in the back when she was just about to leave the alleyway. she fell on the ground and saw the person that shot her run away and jump off of the cliff which the area was on. most of her body was bloody, and she couldn't get herself to stand up. the bullet was deep inside of her, and she had no choice but to lay there until she stopped breathing for good.

when Almond finished interrogating the clothing store workers, he was done. he was ready to round up the shooters and arrest them once and for all. he walked up to the nearest police officer.
"alright, i've finished interrogating everyone i needed to. we need to find all of the shooters and arrest them before things get worse" Almond told him.
"okay, but... i believe things already have..." the police officer said when he looked around and noticed Walnut's dead body. he frowned in disappointment.
"what do you mean...?"
"...near the alleyway."
Almond looked over at the alleyway and was deeply disturbed by what he saw. he rushed over and saw the corpse of his daughter laying on the ground. he knelt down near her and started crying.
"i'm sorry, Walnut... i... i should've taken better care of you..." he whispered.
he ran his fingers through her hair in sorrow. he never thought he would have to see this this soon. he couldn't look at her body any longer, so he stood up and collected her notepad, which had a bit of blood on the cover. he took a look at the contents of it before giving it to the police.

"hmm... this might be useful for discovering where the shooters went. we'll keep it with us" one of the police officers said.
"thank you..." Almond responded.
"you don't have to stay here with us. we know you've seen something rather traumatic..." another police officer said.
"i know... i'll see you later. bye."
Almond then got in his car and drove home with tears in his eyes. his eyes were so watery that he couldn't see the road, which landed him in a tragic car crash. he died shortly after.

note: i'm not that good at writing investigations. i know the deaths in this book are pretty much predictable, but i still try to make them sad. also, this was an extra chapter, but i wrote it because it involved death. the next chapter will go back to the original story. thank you for reading and i hope you enjoy the next chapter!
