"Are you ready for this?" Chris asks me as we pull up outside my doctor's office. We were here for my 16 week check up and if the baby was cooperating, we'd find out if we were having a boy or a girl today.
"I think so. I'm ready to be home. I hate going out lately. I feel like everyone is just staring at my midsection." I had felt like I had popped over night. I wasn't huge obviously, but there was definitely a bump if you knew to look for it. And in a town as small as Sudbury, everyone was looking for it.
"Well then lets go and get this done and then I'll take you out for donuts before we go home." He says, grabbing my hand and kissing it before we got out of the car.
...
"Are you happy?" I ask an hour later as we go back to the car.
"Incredibly. I would be just as happy no matter what we were having."

We pull into the driveway and everyone is there. "Fuck..." I say lowly.
"Language. It can hear you."
"Ok, first of all, no it can't. Not yet anyway. And you would know that if you bothered to read the books I got for us. Second of all, you can't keep calling it an it." I say as we walk inside. Our entire family is in the living room staring at us like we're an exhibit in a zoo. "Can we help you?" I ask.
"Stop playing coy. We want to know." My mom is practically vibrating she's so excited.
"Oh, it's a shame the baby wasn't cooperating then today. We didn't get to see." I say, watching as every face in the room falls. Chris and I cannot contain our laughter and we're soon doubled over in it. "I'm kidding. I'm kidding. That was too good an opportunity to pass up on. You should've seen your faces." I perch on Chris's lap when he sits down on the only available chair in the living room. "Do you want to tell them or should I?"
"I'll go. We're having a..."
