Happy Birthday Baby!

*2 Months Later*

I'm woken up by someone jumping on my chest. "Indie, I said to gently wake Mommy up. Not reenact a scene from WrestleMania." I hear Chris laugh from the doorway.

"Now why on earth would my lovely little baby be up early today?" She giggles. "Happy Birthday my sweet Indie." I say, placing a kiss on her temple.

"How're you feeling?" Chris asks me once I've joined them in our kitchen.

"Dazed. It doesn't seem real that she's already turning one." I say and he pulls me into a hug.

"I know. We made it through. I wasn't sure we would, but we did it."

...

We're at the park a couple of hours later, surrounded by our families and friends. "Who the hell invited Tara?" I ask Carly, the fake smile never leaving my face as I watched Tara and her parents walk down and join the party.

"Mom did. She figured a year had passed and we should all work towards healing."

"She outed me and your brother in front of the whole school and as such, I was uninvited from my own graduation."

Cake passed and presents and as the sun was beginning to set, Chris and I stood up. "We wanted to thank you all for coming. This wasn't just a day to celebrate our baby girl but also celebrate the milestone of making it through her first year. Mostly all of you played such a huge role in getting us to this point and I know Chris and I wouldn't still be standing upright if it wasn't for the help. And for those who didn't think we could do it, or hindered us along the way," I pause to look at Tara, "we made it out alright. In spite of the shit and the storm."

...

"Did you really need to say that?" Chris asks as we get ready for bed that night. Despite the birthday cake that had her babbling for most of the day, Indie knocked out hard on the car-ride home.

"Say what?"

"What you said at the end, about Tara?"

"Chris, we didn't get to go to our graduation because of what she said in that cafeteria. My last act as a normal teenager before I was going to be a mom and it got stripped away from me. I understand what your ma was trying to do, but our daughter's first birthday was not the place to do it. Not once in the last year had Tara shown her face and now, suddenly, she's at this party? I was not ok with that."

"You could have asked her and her parents nicely to leave."

"And then I would have been seen as the jealous wife. There was no winning that situation and I really didn't need today to be made into a three-ring circus, any more than it was already going to be."

"She was my best friend Presley, and I thought yours too."

"So did I, until I was outed in the middle of lunch and then that friendship died. She doesn't get to be a part of my daughter's life."

"Your daughter? I could have sworn I was there for everything."

"Don't do that. Don't act like what I just said was worse than what she did."

"I'm not saying it is, but you can't expect me not to get pissed off when you say things like that."

"I'm done having this conversation. When you want to at least try and see things from my perspective, I'll be waiting to talk."

I walk out of our bedroom, heading for Indie's room where I stand and watch her sleep. I'm not sure how long I'm leaning against that doorframe before I hear Chris come up behind me. "I'm sorry. I don't know what had gotten into me."

"It's ok Presley. It's been an emotional day for all of us."

"That still doesn't mean I had to jump down your throat." He pulls me into a hug. "There's something I need to tell you Chris."

"What is it?"

"I'm pregnant..."
