Sue woke up suddenly and without any wish to do so, but the reason she woke was the weird smell in the room. She looked around - Emily wasn't in bed, next to her. Sue found that out when she reached for Emily with a hand and all that was there was empty space. The singer blinked a few times before she was fully awake and then she saw her girlfriend sitting on the couch across from her, smiling and holding a cigarette.
"Morning, beautiful." - Emily said and took a drag on her cigarette.
"Emily, it reeks of cigarettes in here. I don't mind you smoking, but I don't like waking up to the smell of smoke. I thought something was on fire!" - Sue replied and rubbed her eyes due to tiredness.
"I'm sorry. It won't happen again." - with that Emily went out to the terrace to finish her cigarette there.
A thought suddenly occurred to Sue. She didn't think that waking up next to the poet would be like this. She expected something more, a kiss to say the least. And Emily seemed to be minding her own business and what not, everything expect for actually acting like she is Sue's girlfriend. The singer wasn't wishing for a breakfast in bed or something like that. She only wanted their first morning as a couple to be a bit more... tender, sweeter.
𝘞𝘦𝘭𝘭, 𝘴𝘩𝘦 𝘥𝘪𝘥 𝘤𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘮𝘦 𝘣𝘦𝘢𝘶𝘵𝘪𝘧𝘶𝘭. - Sue thought and sighed, looking around the room. She then decided she'd stand up and get dressed, so she did. By that time Emily had already finished her cigarette and was back in the room.
"Do you want coffee or some sort of a breakfast? I don't have much food in here right now, but I can go to the shop?" - Emily asked, standing by the coffee machine.
"No, that's okay. Coffee is fine." - Sue forced a smile. Wasn't the poet going to hug her, kiss her or anything? Wasn't she going to at least ask her how she slept?
Emily only nodded to what Sue said and turned on the coffee machine, but she quickly found out she doesn't have any coffee when she opened the drawer. At that time Sue hugged her from behind and began kissing her neck.
"Sue, what are you doing?" - Emily asked without pulling back.
"What? Don't you like it?" - the singer answered the question with another question.
"It's not that. But I'm in the middle of something here." - Emily replied and put a mug filled with milk in the microwave to warm it. Sue made Emily turn around to look at her.
"You're so cold today. What's the matter?" - the singer crossed her arms.
"I didn't sleep very well and honestly, I'm not in the mood for anything." - was Emily's reply, said in an even and lifeless tone.
"Still, you don't have to take it out on 𝘮𝘦." - Sue frowned. Emily sighed and kissed her girlfriend softly.
"I'm sorry, Sue. I'll make it up to you, okay? I know this is not how you imagined our first morning together." - the poet spoke after the two broke apart. This time Sue smiled genuinely and kissed Emily's nose.
"So, we don't have coffee?" - the singer changed the subject. Emily looked back into the drawer, like she forgot the answer to the given question.
"It's okay, I have instant coffee. It will do for now." - after she said that, the two heard buzzing. They followed the sound to the nightstand on Sue's side. It was her phone. Sue grabbed it and read the message aloud.
"𝘏𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘰, 𝘮𝘴. 𝘎𝘪𝘭𝘣𝘦𝘳𝘵. 𝘚𝘪𝘯𝘤𝘦 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘧𝘪𝘳𝘴𝘵 𝘢𝘭𝘣𝘶𝘮 𝘸𝘢𝘴 𝘴𝘶𝘤𝘩 𝘢 𝘴𝘶𝘤𝘤𝘦𝘴𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘪𝘵 𝘳𝘦𝘤𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘭𝘺 𝘩𝘪𝘵 𝘯𝘶𝘮𝘣𝘦𝘳 5 𝘰𝘯 𝘉𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘣𝘰𝘢𝘳𝘥 𝘏𝘰𝘵 100, 𝘸𝘦'𝘳𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘳𝘰𝘸𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘢 𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘵𝘺 𝘪𝘯 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘩𝘰𝘯𝘰𝘳. 𝘠𝘰𝘶 𝘤𝘢𝘯 𝘪𝘯𝘷𝘪𝘵𝘦 𝘸𝘩𝘰𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘸𝘢𝘯𝘵." - Sue read. "It's my boss. Well, our boss."
"Great! We'll go as a couple. I'm so excited!" - Emily replied and hugged Sue. But the latter was suddenly unsure about it all. Her friends were gonna be there. Her family was gonna be there. And they weren't very tolerant about homosexuality. So Sue pulled back to look at Emily.
"I don't know about that, Emily." - the singer sighed and looked down.
"Why? What's wrong?" - Emily replied with a worried face.
"My... friends and family are gonna be there." - Sue started, still searching for the right words.
"So?" - Emily raised a brow.
"I... haven't told them about you." - the singer looked down, a bit ashamed. She knew exactly where this conversation was going and it was breaking her heart.
"Oh." - Emily frowned and sighed. "I see."
"What?"
"That all the things you said about not letting anything get in the way of what we have, are bullshit." - Emily looked more that furious. She was disappointed.
"Not... not all of them!" - Sue tried to defend herself, but it seemed like a lost cause. "Emily. I still want to be with you. Just-"
"Just not in front of everyone. So tell me, Sue, who are the lucky few who would get to know about us?" - Emily asked almost rhetorically, looking directly into Sue's eyes. She waited for an answer, but all she got as one was silence and Sue looking away. "Right. There aren't any."
"Emily, this isn't fair! I haven't grown up being queer and my family and friends haven't seen that side of me! But you don't know shit about how that feels, do you?" - Emily scoffed.
"What? I don't know shit about 𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵, Sue?" - a tear rolled down Emily's face. "Well, fuck you! Fuck you!" - next thing she knows, Emily bursted into tears and desperately tried to wipe them away, but to no avail. "Because in reality, the only person who ever accepted me was my sister. So don't expect to "meet the parents", Sue, because in their eyes they only have one daughter and that's not me. So no, I don't live in a fucking fairy tale as you see!"
"Then you know how it feels like! How miserable it is to know that you might end up alone in the world just because of who you are. But why should I go through the same shit you went through?!" - it seemed like Sue was trying to sound louder than Emily and vice versa. Silence followed. "Huh? Tell me, you seem to have an answer for everything, so tell me!" - Emily looked down.
"Do you know what was my safe place every time I felt miserable and alone lately?" - Sue shook her head, waiting for an answer. "It was you. 𝘠𝘰𝘶 were my safe place. But not anymore."
"Emily-"
"Get out." - the poet interrupted Sue and said that in a warning tone.
"Emily, I-"
"I said, get out. And don't bother coming back." - Emily motioned to the door with an angry face. Sue sighed and left.
