I could feel Duncan's hot breath on my neck as I read the text message from Alexander. I pushed at his chest and walked up the stairs with him hot on my heels.

"He messaged you, right?"

I ignored him and began packing the few clothes I had unpacked.

"After he did whatever to hurt you, you just go running back to him?" he shouted, "Fucking answer me Seth!"

I was at my last straw.

"Duncan, you're my best mate, I didn't see you as anything else." I explained, "I love him, so yes, I will go running back because I choose him."

Duncan stared at me in disbelief and for a moment I couldn't believe that those words had come out of my mouth either. Then his expression changed, he smirked at me.

"How stupid are you?" he whispered.

"What?"

"You don't actually think a guy like him wants you?" he laughed, "He can buy anything he wants and anyone he wants, you're just his new flavor."

That had stung a little more than it should've but rather than replying, I bit my lip and hauled my suitcases down the stairs. I knew my relationship with Alexander, Duncan wasn't the one sleeping, talking, fucking or spending time with him. I was.

"You're really going to leave like this?" he scoffed, "Pick your rich boyfriend over your best mate?"

I turned to look at him, "Don't play the guilt trip card Duncan."

I opened the door and walked to the black Range Rover parked outside. Palo nodded towards me and proceeded to put my bags in the trunk, I opened the door and slid into the vehicle.

"Missed me?"

On instinct, my body moved towards him.

We were at Alexander's apartment. I had missed staring into his hazel eyes and the way he would lick his lips while furrowing his brows when he was trying to understand something.

"Coffee or Triple Fudge-Brownie?" he asked me holding up the pints of ice cream.

"Coffee, please."

He handed me a spoon and sat beside me on a barstool. We sat in silence for a while before I broke the ice.

"Are you still marrying her?"

Wow Seth, out with the heavy.

"I don't know Seth." he rubbed a hand along his jaw.

"It's a simple ye-"

"No, Seth, it's not. I've spoken to Francesca and she's not happy but she understands, however the fact still remains that this is a marriage for alliance and power."

I felt small. I knew this was bigger than me but I wanted him to choose me. The cartel needed him and some outsider wasn't going to come in and easily destroy years of blood, sweat and tears put in by his family. This wasn't a game anymore.

"I understand."

"Baby, don't give me that," he reached out to hold my hand, "I meant it when I said I love you Seth and if I could have it any other way, I'd run away with you in a heartbeat. This isn't a fairy-tale, it's blood and war with no remorse."
