"I thought that now we're moved in together, you should tell me a little more about your past to me." Colby said.
"Oh, I'd love to! I grew up in a small city in Northeastern Nevada. It was super country, but at the same time, a mining town. Most people moved to my hometown because of the mines. My mom immigrated from the Philippines and met my dad who was an army brat. My dad was born in Frankfurt, Germany and lived there until he was 2, moving to America. He was officially an American citizen until after he took the American Citizenship Test when he was 10 years old. I have one older brother who is older by 1 year and 5 months. So, yeah. That's my family background. My educational background is a little confusing; I went to elementary school at Mountain View Elementary School. After that, I went to Flag View Intermediate School for 5th and 6th grade. After that school, I went to Adobe Middle School for 7th and 8th grade. My high school was Elko High School, and I went there all 4 years of high school. I lived there until I was 18 years old, then I moved out for college. I attended the University of Nevada, Reno in Reno, Nevada. Then, for my sophomore year, I transferred to the University of California, Los Angeles, where I attend college now. Prior to moving out for college, I dated a guy from Salt Lake City, Utah named Jose Garcia. He was an amazing, incredible boyfriend. The only problem was that we lived about 200 miles away from each other. He was my first official boyfriend and my first ex. We're still friends, though. Which is good. Then, that brings me to you. I moved to LA after transferring to UCLA. On my first night here, I went to a random house party, and I was lucky enough to meet you, Colby. I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw you. Here I am today, having moved in with you. That is my story so far." I said.
"Wow, I feel like you just gave me a 10-minute speech on your whole life story." Colby said.
"Yeah, pretty much. Now, you tell me about yourself." I said.
"Oh, it's my turn. Oh boy. I was born in Stanley, Kansas to two wonderful southern parents. I have a brother named Gage. My birth name is actually Cole Robert Brock. In 2014, Sam and I reached 10,000 followers on Vine. Then, in April of that same year, we reached 100,000 followers. We had gotten over 1 million followers before Vine shut down. Let's see, I went to high school at Blue Valley High School where I got the pleasure of playing clarinet in band. Yes, that is also how I met Sam. During band camp, we both had a crush on the same girl. Neither of us had the balls to ask her out, so we just bonded over our shyness I guess. I moved to LA in late 2015, around November of December. At the time, Sam and I wanted to work on growing our social media career. We were both 18 years old at the time. We didn't know what we were doing in LA, really. Just two Kansas boys in the big city, you know? Well, since then, Sam and I have been able to build a sort of empire out of our YouTube channel. We have an amazing fan base that we love dearly. We are lucky to have been able to change our content from exploring abandoned buildings after our arrest, to more paranormal activity type videos." Colby said.
"I'd hate to break it to you, baby, but I don't believe in ghosts. I only believe in Jesus." I said.
"And that's completely fine to not believe in the paranormal. I completely understand where you're coming from with that." Colby said.
"Good. I had also grew up in a religious household where my parents would take my brother and I to church every Saturday. The religion is called Seventh-Day Adventist. I still adhere to my religion and go to church every Saturday." I said.
"Oh, I didn't know you were religious. That's completely fine with me too. I would describe my religion as agnostic. While I don't believe in Jesus or God, I do think there is some other higher power up there. That would also fall under believing in the paranormal." Colby said.
"Ah, I see." I said.
"I think having our differences is what will allow us to learn from each other." Colby said.
"I think so too." I said. After having this long conversation on how we grew up, where we grew up, and all that, it was around 6PM already. For the remainder of the evening, I showed Colby my favorite Korean drama that came out last year called Business Proposal. This drama stars; Ahn Hyo-seop, Kim Se-jeong, Kim Min-gue, Seol In-a, and Lee Duck-hwa. Some may recognize Ahn Hyo-seop from the wildly popular Abyss Korean drama that co-stars Park Bo-young and Han So Hee. Colby was surprised that a K-drama episode is more than an hour long.
"I don't think I have an attention span long enough for this." Colby said.
"Just watch it. I think you'll like it." I said.
"Okay. Can you understand these without subtitles?" Colby asked.
"Bits and pieces, but I think I still need the subtitles to completely understand what's happening." I said.
"Ah, okay." Colby said.
Colby and I sit through the first episode of Business Proposal. The synopsis for the first episode is this; "To appease his grandfather's wishes, Kang Tae-moo agrees to a blind date. Jin Young-seo enlists Shin Ha-ri's help to scare away her latest prospect." (Netflix, 2022). After watching the first episode, Colby is into it now. He wants to watch the second episode. We sit and watch the first 3 episodes, which took 3 hours. It's now 9PM. I decided to then show Colby some of my favorite K-pop music videos. I wanted to show Colby the reasons why I wanted to learn Korean. It was mostly because of what's called the Korean Wave, or in Korean it's called 한류(Hallyu). The spread of Korean media from South Korea across the world.
