"cold skin, drag my feet on the tile as i'm walking down the corridor"

It was loud. She stood in line at the school's cafeteria. Laughter was coming from every corner of the room, conversations lapped over each other so it was impossible to make out any coherent words. Kanashii felt highly unfamiliar with the scenery before her. She only ever ate her nutrition rations in the solitude of her locked quarters. When it was her turn Kanashii's eyes fell upon the multitude of foods that were offered before her. Yet another thing she would have to familiarize herself with. She didn't know so many different looking foods could exist next to each other.

Subconsciously she started counting all the trays of different foods. Twelve. Thirteen. Her rations consisted of highly nutritious oats quelled in hot water to make a filling ration. She didn't need anything else. She had to admit though, when the different scents of all the foods hit her nose, she couldn't help but feel inclined to try something new. Fourteen. Fifteen. The Creator wouldn't approve, Kanashii's mind instantly threw in. A part of her mind figured that there was no way for her to know. Sixteen.

"Don't know what to pick?" Someone behind her asked.

She turned looking right at Kirishima. He already had his plate filled with interesting looking things. There was a serving that looked like some type of red meat in a brown glaze and a bowl of white rice. Kanashii had to admit that it smelled really enticing. He could tell that she was overwhelmed with choice.

"May I?" He motioned toward the food.

She nodded. As soon as she agreed Kirishima loaded up foods on her tray that looked similar to his.

"Thank you." She said, her eyes still glued to the tray in her arms.

Kirishima chuckled. To him she looked exactly like a kid in a candy store. He had never seen someone get this excited about cafeteria food before and as much as he found it endearing, it was confusing too.

"Are you going to sit with us?" He nodded toward a table not for from the middle of the room.

Mina was already sitting at the table engaged in a vivid conversation with a dark haired boy and another boy who Kanashii quickly recognized as the one who couldn't sit still in the written exam. She knew that her order didn't entail socializing with these people, but then she wondered if it would do any harm if she did. Maybe it might prove more useful, to engage with her classmates and not just sit by quietly. At least this way she could pretend that she fit in with them and wasn't just here on the Creator's orders.

"Sure." She said.

Kirishima beamed at her. He was genuinely excited to get to know her, though he couldn't put his finger on what it was exactly. It felt similar to what he had felt in the entrance exam. When his legs would move without him even thinking about it, because he had seen a girl getting crushed by heaps of metal. He hadn't even thought twice about losing time, when he punched the metal out of the way to reach her. And right now it felt like he was pulling her out of something too. Whether it was her solitude or something else, he couldn't tell.

"Hey Kana-chan." Mina greeted her as she sat across from her. "Congrats on first place. You made all those tests look so easy."

Kanashii looked up to her slightly startled. She hadn't expected Mina to call her that, but she didn't comment on it.

"Thank you." She said softly.

Mina, Sero, the black haired boy, and Kaminari, the fidgety blond, fell back into their conversation with Kirishima, though he did glance at Kanashii a few times. She seemed completely out of her element. The complete opposite of what she had been during the entrance exam and Aizawa's tests.
