"What is that?"
Kanashii looked at the white paper bag Dabi held before her eyes. As was usual for them, they sat on a random roof in the middle of the night after both had finished whatever business they had attended beforehand.
"It's a cupcake." She looked just as confused as before. "They're for celebrations."
"What is there to celebrate?" She tilted her head. "Your birthday is in January."
"I know that." He shook his head. "I just thought we'd celebrate your first day of school. This being your first time to go to an actual school and all."
Dabi figured that she had never gotten anything as a gift, so he thought he'd do something nice for once. He had seen her slip through some dark alleyway and then decided to get a cupcake before catching her. He had hoped that she would have some time left, as she usually did.
"I don't see how I should celebrate that, I'm just-"
He interrupted before she could finish.
"Doing what you were ordered to do, I know."
She looked at him for a moment. He seemed upset about something.
"Look, Mako..." He hesitated. "Just take it."
He handed her the paper bag. She took out the cupcake careful not to mess up the colorful decorations. She was surprised to see that it was topped with some sort of blue and purple colored cream.
"Thank you."
Dabi shrugged. "Ah, it's nothing. Just thought you might like it."
She nodded breaking the cupcake in half. Few crumbs fell into her lap. She held out one half of the cupcake for Dabi to take. A slight grin crept on his face as he looked at the cupcake now split in half.
"What do you think you're doing?"
"You said we."
He instantly knew what she meant. In her mind him saying, that they'd both celebrate, meant he deserved half of the cupcake. He took his half of the cupcake, his grin growing wider. Sometimes it was almost unnoticeable how much she was under the control of the Creator. He cherished those few and far between moments. They both fell quiet for a moment. Kanashii was surprised at how sweet it tasted and how soft the cream was despite being able to hold its shape so well. She couldn't name all the flavors, but she wondered whether Dabi had chosen the colors for a specific reason.
Her eyes fell on him. His black hair formed wild spikes atop his head and his bright blue eyes focused on the cupcake. She noticed the pale skin beneath the deep purple scarring on his face. He had laid his black coat on the floor so they had something to sit on. That meant Kanashii could see how the purple colored skin crept up his arms only being held together by a few metal stitches. She could instantly see that the scorching heat of his blue flames was affecting his skin more than it should. He looked up at her, noticing her purple eyes studying his arms. Dabi knew that she would comment on them again. He didn't understand why she would be worried, the Creator would have her head if she knew Makoto allowed herself to care about him. She knew that better than anybody else and yet, for three years she had allowed herself to at least somewhat care about the only person that treated her like a human being.
Her eyes met his. As if she had been caught Kanashii quickly averted her eyes and looked down. Dabi had the urge to chuckle, but didn't. She quickly recovered looking back onto his arms.
