You jolted awake at the sound of the door opening, the bright sun beaming into your squinting eyes.

"Are you awake y/n?" you heard Mikey's voice as he stepped into the room.

"Now I am." you grumbled as you sat up in the small bed. Mikey smiled a guilty smile and approached you slowly. He was holding something behind his back. Curiously you tried to peek behind him.

Mikey smiled brightly and pulled out from behind him a bouquet of beautiful flowers.

"For you" he said as he placed them in your lap. You blushed and admired the flowers.

"They're peonies." he exclaimed as he pulled a chair up beside your bed.

"I love them"

You surprised him by pulling him into a tight hug. He giggled and pat you on the head.

"How've you been?" Mikey asked as he admired your sleepy face.

"I saw you just yesterday, Mikey." you yawned. "The nurse told me if I have a smooth recovery I'll be out in a couple weeks." Mikey smiled and ran his hand along your back.

"I'll be waiting."

You giggled and stroked his hair as he shut his eyes. He reminded you of a stray cat that was never show any affection.

"y/n?" he said quietly.

"Yes Mikey?"

"Why do you think Baji did it?"

His questioned changed the atmosphere of your small hospital room. You held his hand and looked into his dull eyes.

"I don't know Baji well, but I do know that he loves his friends dearly. He did it so you would forgive Kazutora. He wants everyone to live happily together." you said softly.

He squeezed your hand and looked away from your eyes.

"I miss my brother every day. I miss when everyone got along and we spent every day on the road with our favourite bikes. I miss when Toman had all of its founding members." he paused for a moment. "So, I'll forgive Kazutora."

Aunt Wakana held your shoulders and looked you up and down with teary eyes. She pulled you in for a tight hug and held her hand at the back of your head.

"y/n I'm so sorry." she sobbed as she hugged you.

"I got myself into this Aunt Wakana! It wasn't anything you did." you reassured her as you pat her back. She sniffled and smiled through her tears.

She placed a small box in your lap and motioned for you to open it. Removing the lid a delicious fragrance tickled your nose.

"I made your favourite, so you better eat it all!" she said as she faked an angry voice. You laughed and nodded your head. 

"Oh, and one more thing!" she says as she hold up a finger.

You watched as she removed a silver necklace with a flower pendant from her own neck and putting it onto yours, closing the clasp. 

"This will keep you safe from now on." she said, satisfied. "It's kept me safe all these years." You smiled and held the necklace int your fist.

"Are you sure I can have it?"

"I don't have much of a choice y/n! You're always getting into trouble after all." she teased. Aunt Wakana hugged you once more and headed to the door. 

"Say hi to Mikey for me next time he visits!" she teased as she left. 

Only a few moments after aunt Wakana left, you were greeted with more visitors. Normally it would've felt exhausting, but you were glad so many people cared for you. A few years ago, no one would even care to visit you. Not even your own parents.

This time, your visitor spoke in a timid voice, peeking into your room. 

"y/n?" 

Takemichi waddled into the room with a faint smile on his face. You waved at him, excited to see his face.

"Hi Takemichi! Your face doesn't seem to be as swollen anymore, I'm glad you're okay!" you said with a toothy grin.

He looked away embarrassed and stood by the edge of your bed.

"I'm really sorry y/n, I could've done more to protect you and Baji but-" you cut him off.

"Takemichi I know you did the most you could. Besides, I owe my life to you! If you didn't bring Mikey and Kazutora to their senses, I probably wouldn't be here right now." you said. Takemichi smiled at your statement.

"But seriously Takemichi. You're an amazing fighter."

"Really?"

"Yeah! Maybe you can't beat Mikey, but you have a kind of strength none of us have." you state, "You never back down, no matter how many bruises cover your body. I don't know where you get the motivation, but you've got to tell me!"

Takemichi thought for a moment before he responded.

"I don't give up... I can't give up because I fight for others. I don't care how beat up I get as long as everyone else is safe." Takemichi says. 

"You need to fight to protect someone. You won't give up when you have someone to protect."

Who was there for you to protect? Immediately you thought of Mikey, the boy you cared for most. Surely Mikey didn't need protecting. In fact, Mikey was the strongest person you knew. You couldn't even come to imagine someone Mikey couldn't beat in a fight - he didn't need you to protect him.

But there was another side to Mikey.

There were times his dark, emotionless eyes would shed tears. He would cry for his lost friends and dear brother who meant the world to him. With him gone, Mikey had no one to truly lean on. 

What if Mikey was the one you were meant to protect?
