LibertyI laid on the thin fabric of the blanket, the Earth prickly in the form of little green blades. Vonna laid next to me, our Dollar Tree picnic basket between the two of us.
"This was nice," she commented, watching the clouds alongside me.
"This was. I feel at peace."
"Pass me another strawberry."
I dug a fresh strawberry out of a container in the basket and dropped it down on her face. She screeched out, surprised and scrambled to grab the fruit before it rolled off into the grass. I smiled, watching her struggle. She thumped me on the forehead, biting into the juicy fruit.
"We should do this more often," I stated.
"After each time you cheat?" she joked.
I reached up towards her, still laying down. I grabbed one of her titties, squishing it. "Hey, not in public, miss ma'am. There are kids around."
"That's too damn bad. Little niggas needa be at school learning how to lose their creativity and be productive 9-5'ers," I cackled.
"You're too evil," she rolled her eyes. "I want one too," I whined, seeing her get another strawberry out of the basket. "Nope. Cause you almost made me drop mine's."
"What that gotta do wit me?"
My phone buzzed underneath my ass, and I checked it. "It's my mom. Hold on," I told my girlfriend.
"Liberty. Where are you?"
"At the park...with Vonna?"
"Don't give me attitude. You got ya lil friends and they parents texting me asking where my daughter is. Next time you ghost ya people, let me know so I can lie for you. Got these people blowing up my phone. I said, I knew you was at the park. They got me scared, talking about they haven't heard from you and stuff. Thought somebody kidnapped yo lil narrow ass," my mom stated.
"My bad. Me and Vonna are leaving the park soon though. We're just gonna be around town."
"Okay. Me and Ramyn are heading back to the house. Stay safe, love."
"You too."
"Bye."
"Bye."
"What happened?" Vonna asked as soon as I hung up. "People was blowing up my mama phone apparently, asking about where I was," I told Vonna, shrugging. "Cause of the beach trip?" she asked curiously. I had told her about it while we were relaxing.
"Yeah. I'm just mad she told them where I was and who I was with. But she didn't know any better. I'm just more ready to leave more than ever now. I don't need the judgment or the commentary anymore."
"I get it," Vonna said. "I feel like everybody's kind of against me because of how I once was. But I made the life changing mistakes that I did, and now I have to deal with that."
"You're not gonna stay in Aster Waters long after high school, are you?" I asked, staring at her with a sad expression. "No," she shook her head, "I need a new start. I need fresh faces. I need to make a life out for myself, not a narrative that's already been written for me."
"Where will you go?" I asked, standing up and stretching.
"I don't know. A few minutes out of town is a good start though," she chuckled.
"I'm serious. I wanna be with you after high school, Vonna. This isn't a game to me anymore," I told her. Vonna pulled me close, her arms around my waist as I tipped my face up towards her. She leaned into me, making me think she was going to give me a kiss, then pulled back. "Every time I see you, I think about fucking Beatrix holding your hand. Or Beatrix messing around with you," she told me, a large amount of hurt in her voice. She let go of me.
"Vonna," I laid my hand on her shoulder, a flashback of yesterday with Beatrix crossing my mind.
"I guess that's what I get. For all the trouble I've caused, huh?" she gave me a sad smile. "The love of my life. Ruined in my eyes." My expression fell as I took in her words. She packed up the basket and grabbed the blanket.
"You love me...Vonna? Genuinely?" I asked.
"I feel a lot for you, Liberty. Well...I did. But now I'm not so sure," she admitted.
"Because I slept with her," I supplied.
"Because you slept with her."
