Liberty"If you don't want a break, why agree to it then?" Jeredine asked me in the back of the car we paid for.
"Because tonight has been wild and we're all fucked," I threw up my hands, "And why not? Vonna will just keep cheating because that's what Vonna is. A cheater."
"I don't think she was always this way," Jeredine started off, "but that doesn't matter because we're living in the now."
"Hold on...turn up the radio," I leaned forward.
The driver turned the radio up and a report of a fire nearby came on. "That's Beatrix's address, isn't it?" Jeredine turned to me.
"Fuck...that is. I don't know it number for number, but..."
"We need to go back," Jeredine said firmly.
"And get ourselves caught up with cops and get caught on fire?" I turned to look at her. "Beatrix and I aren't supposed to be around each other anymore. That's what Vonna wants remember? I'm sorry, but she isn't my friend anymore."
"Wow, so just like that you're gonna forget about her?" Jeredine shook her head, then turned to the driver. "Turn around and drop us back off where we came from."
"Don't make things seem like that- I'm not turning on her. We've just made too many mistakes together for us to keep being friends and she likes my girlfriend for God's sake," I defended myself.
"But at the end of the day there's been a fire and you used to care for her so suck up your shit and forget what your lousy ass girlfriend said and let's go make sure Beatrix is okay. Call Vonna if you want to and tell her where you're going since apparently she's your mom," Jeredine argued.
"Who's side are you really on, Jeredine?"
"Just because I'm your friend, doesn't mean I'll blindly follow you into stupid ways of thinking," she stated. "Right now, I'm going to check on Beatrix. You can wait in the car or you can come. I'm starting to consider her more of a friend than you are."
"Because I don't wanna go back to see a girl I made a lot of mistakes with and who likes my girlfriend?"
"Yes. Sure, if that's what you wanna believe. You make everything about yourself when this is about someone we know in trouble," she said.
"Yeah, and if we get caught by the cops, we'll all really be in trouble with our parents," I argued, "I thought you never liked Beatrix anyways. The whole crew was always so adamant-
"Liberty. Just...shut up," Jeredine shook her head.
We pulled up to Beatrix's house. Or, at least what was left of it. Ambulances and cops were already on the scene, trying to deescalate everything.
"I can't get much further than this," the driver told us, pointing to the barricades two cops were helping put out.
"What, do you like Beatrix too? Do I have to worry about another one of my friends being a snake?"
"Even if I did, it wouldn't have shit to do with a girl like you, who's in a relationship," Jeredine pointed at me. "And I don't. I don't throw myself into relationships trying to fix abusive people and trying to get them to hold onto me."
"The fuck- That's what Beatrix did, not me," I stated.
"No...Beatrix never knew and she only wanted out once she realized what was going on. She might have been deluded for a long time, but eventually she saw through. You knew who Vonna was from the moment Beatrix revealed who her ex really was in that cafeteria last year, thinking you could make her into something else besides a cheater. You knew what all was at stake when you befriended Beatrix and got with Vonna."
I stared at Jeredine, my eyes watering.
"I might have liked Vonna at once, as a friend of course, but it was only for your benefit. Only for the benefit of my friend. Guess you lost another one today," she scoffed.
Jeredine left the car, running towards the scene.
"You can go ahead," I told the driver coldly, pulling up the top of my shirt and burying my face into it as I sobbed.
