Liberty

Just as Vonna and I were starting to formulate some sort of resemblance of a plan, I heard the key to Beatrix's house being furiously unlocked.

"She's home- Quick, hide!" I hissed, shooing at Vonna.

"I'm tired of running from shit. And for her to be that pissed, she must know that-

"You're here," Beatrix growled, slamming the front door behind herself. "Who let you in?"

"She kind of let herself in," I shrugged, and Beatrix's eyes flew to me. The anger that flared in them reminded me that I don't truly know who Beatrix is. You never know who someone truly is inside.

"What are you doing here?" Beatrix's eyes flew back to Vonna.

"I was looking for my girlfriend, figured I'd stop by and see what was so good to miss out on me," she said sarcastically, a whole lot of resentment in her voice.

"Guess I am that good then, huh?"

Vonna and Beatrix glared at each other.

"How much have you told her?" Beatrix's gaze swept back over to me. "I know you couldn't keep your mouth shut."

"Bold of you to assume that," I snapped back, "what if I had kept my mouth shut and she didn't know? Then here you come mentioning shit."

"I know you too well, Liberty. Now how much did you tell her?"

"Enough," Vonna answered, "Enough and more."

"What's that supposed to mean?" Beatrix stepped forward. Vonna and Beatrix matched each other's dominance, trying to see who would fold first.

"This Chad dude. What does he want with my girl?"

"You think I know?"

"You're the one who somehow has all these friends and shit in El Paso, or whatever lie you've came up with," Vonna stated.

"It is not a lie. Don't speak on shit you don't know about, Vonna," Beatrix growled.

"Instead of arguing," I stepped between the two of them, my hands on each other of their shoulders, "How about we start coming up with some solutions? What's the updates you have on Chad?"

Beatrix sucked in a breath, breaking away from my touch, all while glaring at Vonna. "I have to call my guy. You two- stay in here," she marched out of the living room and went up to her bedroom.

A sick feeling eased into my stomach as I sank down on the couch. "I hate all of this."

"It's not your fault," Vonna sighed, her touch against my skin starting to be a foreign thing. How could my best friend become more familiar to me than my own girlfriend? How could her ex have eased her way into our lives?

Why did I let that happen?

"It is. My actions led to consequences-

"It isn't," Vonna said firmly, wiggling her hand into mine.

"Just cause you say it isn't doesn't mean shit, Von," I looked over at her, my gaze sad.

"What's the update?" Vonna broke eye contact with me to look up at Beatrix coming down the stairs.

"Chad's been dealt with."

"Is he dead?" I demanded.

"Yes," Beatrix said after awhile.

"And you're sure of that?" Vonna tilted her head, still looking at Beatrix.

"You don't get to question me," Vonna's ex pointed at her. "Never."

"Where's all this coming from, Beatrix?" I asked, concerned.

"We were supposed to be celebrating a full school year together. This week, at the beginning of the summer," Beatrix stated. "Me and you Vonna. It hasn't even been an actual year...since us."

Vonna looked away, standing and pretending to dust off her pants.

"Now...don't do that. You don't even remember?" Beatrix demanded, coming down the rest of the stairs as Vonna avoided her gaze.

"It doesn't matter though because the two of you aren't together," I stood up too, laying a hand on Vonna's shoulder.

"It matters to me. That was my heart you broke," Beatrix turned her eyes from me back to Vonna, "I have to see you everyday now, and I'm just supposed to forget how I felt."

"Do you still feel the same way or something?" Vonna's head snapped up. I held a tight grip on her arm now, scared that there would be another confrontation. "Do you still want me, B?"

"Don't you dare do that," Beatrix screamed.

"Beatrix, if you want us to leave-

"You don't have a choice. You need to stay here a few more days while I make sure Chad doesn't have anymore plans of resurfacing or that any of his goons do," Beatrix turned to me.

"You're not going to keep my girlfriend away from me," Vonna said quietly, "nor everyone else. Not her family, not her friends. I won't let you control her."

"I'm not trying to control her. I'm trying to keep her safe," Beatrix insisted.

"By keeping her away from me?" Vonna scoffed.

I started to speak, "Beatrix, I-

"You can't control her how I controlled you," Vonna said softly. "I'm sorry, but you can't."

Beatrix paused, her chest heaving.

"You're right," she nodded, laughing to herself, "You both can get the fuck out. You're safe now."

"I thought you still needed to check and make sure he was-

"No," Beatrix stared coldly into my eyes, then she glanced over at Vonna. "Your girlfriend's strong enough to protect you, right?"

"Liberty, let's go," Vonna murmured, looking away from Beatrix and starting to gather up the things I had at the house.

Seeing this side of Beatrix, I guess now I can really believe she's the criminal I've found her to be.
