Beatrix

I drove Liberty to Vonna's, a sour expression on her face the entire ride there. "You know, this isn't even something between you and Vonna. This is all me and her. I hate when she does this. We were just having a nice time together- you know, me and you," Liberty ranted, "Something me and Von can rarely have because she's always complaining about one thing or the other."

"Like what?" I asked neutrally.

"Oh, you're hanging out with Jeredine today? I thought you didn't want to be around them if they still stole sometimes. Or, A'livia can wait, she makes you do too much crazy shit anyways. Like, are you not as much their friend as I am? She doesn't want me to be around anyone else unless it's her. That's what it feels like," she complained.

"I hate to say it, but this is how it started out with me. She was all sweet and shit then-

"Vonna would never hurt me, Beatrix. I'm sorry about what happened to you but in the same breath, the Von I know would never do something like that, so just chill, okay?"

"Just tryna make sure you're safe," I murmured.

"And I am. She's my girlfriend," Liberty stressed.

"She was mine's too."

The rest of the car ride was quiet until we got to Vonna's place. Well, let me rephrase that: her parent's crib. If we really went head to head on who deserved Liberty more than the other, Vonna would come out of the fight bruised and battered.

I had my own things, my own dreams, my own reputation, and my own thoughts. In my opinion, Vonna couldn't claim half of that, without even including the type of person she used to be only months ago.

"Thanks for looking out for me, Beatrix, but I don't need it, okay?" Liberty stood up a little on her toes to kiss me on the forehead. "I'll text you sometime. This date better be good after all the hell she raised."

"Yeah," I gave her a lazy smile, but my cheeks felt warm from the kiss she left on my skin.

I walked her to the door, and felt like a father handing his daughter over for marriage. Vonna awkwardly stood in the threshold, holding a container of what looked like leftover something's and a tight smile. "Beatrix. Again. Nice to see you?"

"Whatever," Liberty interrupted our false cordiality, pushing past Vonna into the house by her shoulder.

"Hey, Vonna," I said awkwardly.

"Who's that, honey?" Vonna's mother called out from somewhere in the house.

"Just Liberty and...Beatrix," Vonna answered.

It was like we time travelled for a moment. Vonna's mother was in front of me so fast that I didn't know what to do. "Beatrix, hon. How are you doing?" Carmela Zion looked me over, a smile plastered on her face. Vonna's mother didn't know about the abuse as it was going on, but she found out soon afterwards when Liberty made Vonna admit to it before the two of them started dating.

Ever since Vonna and I got into an argument one day, (this one time), she's been scared that I'd sue or something. I could see it in her eyes. But I guess her reaction was somewhat normal, although probably not so moral, since she was the top boutique owner in town. I guess she had resigned to ass kissing.

Sometimes I wonder if Vonna and Liberty's relationship is partially due to the two owners wanting good business. But I'll keep my mouth shut about that. "I'm doing fine. Just dropping Liberty off."

"Ohhh," Vonna's mother's eyes widened for a bit. "That's good. Crime has been going up recently since those...hooligans from Houston have been passing through here and there. That's good."

"Yeah," I said awkwardly, "Well, I have to go. Have a good night," I have Vonna and her mother a little wave.

"Stay safe, hon!"

Yeah, I will. I just walked away from a monster.
