BeatrixI've got to find Liberty something to do that'll occupy her mind while I'm gone. Leaving her in such a distraught state earlier made me feel bad, but I knew I needed to upkeep my job for the next couple of days.
I stood in front of the cash register, trying to countdown the hours until the end of my shift as I saw too many familiar faces: A'livia, Jeredine, Amy, and Onella approached my counter.
"I'm on the clock right now guys. I really can't do this right now-
"What are you hoping to accomplish with our friend?" Onella demanded.
"And why are you at work if you're so fucking sick?" Amy added.
"It's complicated."
"Yeah, we figured you'd give us a bullshit excuse. That's why Vonna's over there right now," Jeredine stated.
A'livia only stared at me, glaring.
"What do you mean Vonna's over there?" I snapped.
"She's at your house-
"Fuck!" I shouted.
"Who-Who was that?" my manager shouted from the back. I went around the corner and pushed past the group of girls, marching out of the building. I just might lose my job today, but what the hell!
"Beatrix, calm down!" Jeredine shouted.
I broke out into a jog, not too keen on the thought of them catching up to me. They didn't even know 1% of what I knew. I don't feel like dealing with the lies right now. With the craziness.
"Beatrix, wait!"
My head flipped back, my eyes meeting A'livia's.
"Take me with you." She turned to the girls, "I'll meet up with y'all later." A'liva was getting into my car on the passenger side, much to my obvious disdain when Jeredine stepped forward. "I'm sorry but as your girlfriend, I don't feel comfortable with you driving around Aster Waters with a girl who's known to steal partners."
I scoffed, "I haven't taken anyone. You're some friend of Liberty's if you're always siding with Vonna and speaking on her personal life."
"We care about her unlike you. You just wanna play with her pussy," Amy defended Jeredine, sending A'livia a strong look that clearly said "why am I defending your girlfriend and you're right here".
"That's not true. Before you speak on me and her-
"And you'll do what? You didn't fight Vonna back."
"What did you say?" I slammed my car door shut, and raced around the front of it. A'livia stopped me halfway, keeping me from slapping the skin off of Jeredine. "You were tryna get down Linerty's pants the day before you announced you were with A, don't try me bitch," I snapped.
"Beatrix!"
I pulled away from A'livia, seeing my manager jogging towards us. This is it. I've lost my damn cover job because of these nosy bitches, and only a few days before my big day.
"What the hell is going on?" he hissed at me.
"Them," I waved my hands at the crew. We had shared some good times together and I had grown to like their different personalities but at the end of the day they were Liberty's "friends" first, and that showed.
"They came here, telling me that one of my friends...something was up with her. An emergency," I sighed, trying to come up with a decent enough lie.
"Well, I can't keep dealing with all of this unprofessionalism. The coming in late, the friends at work, the laziness, the customer service, the-
"I get it. You're gonna fire me, right?" I asked.
"I'm sorry, Beatrix. It's what I have to do. I like you enough that I'll let you quit on your own and write you a nice letter for your next job, but I can't keep you on my team. This theater has been in this town for years, under different management and companies yes, but we have a reputation to uphold. A family that is this community, to please. I'm letting you go."
"Thanks," I sighed.
The crew looked on, some mixed feelings of surprise and guilt. "Happy now?" I turned to them, shaking my head. "Man, y'all swear I'm obsessed with Liberty, but look what mess you've gotten me into."
"I want all of you off my property," my old manager looked each of us in the eyes before walking back inside.
I was going to miss that grease-filled building, low key. But now's not the time for goodbyes.
Maybe it never will be.
I didn't look at any of them, especially Jeredine, as I got into my car.
Vonna, why the fuck do you keep ruining my life?
