I'll explain the ending as it's a tad bit confusing. To the future timeline, y/n never existed. He's a figment of mikey's imagination which represented his childhood. If you've read the manga, Mikey has mentioned several times how Toman was his everything, when Draken died, Mikey said how "it's empty". In this case, y/n was the reason Mikey always had his childish demeanor. Y/n represented everything that Mikey held dearly as a child. The ending happened the way it happened because Mikey finally accepted and moved on from it.(Shinichiro's death, Sanzu's scars, etc). It was him moving forward with his life. Think of it as Mikey having an imaginary friend, and not being able to let go of them. Him finally accepting y/n dying was really him accepting growth as a person. Y/n being in every single arc with Mikey showed that no matter how much Mikey changed, he was still just a child. The final arc was Mikey having to fight with himself, and having to move on with his life as an adult. He didn't necessarily kill his childhood, but he was okay with not acting upon it
