"What is it like? The life outside this village?" You couldn't help but ask Ethan. The two of you were heading back to the castle to get Rose's flask back. The two of you had made a deal, he was going to bring you back to Lady Dimitrescu, in exchange for his daughter's remains. Ethan had taken you quite far from the castle grounds, and so the walk was going to be a while, you figured a conversation would make the time pass by a bit quicker.

His reply was short. "Loud, and busy,"

"Is that a good thing or a bad thing?" You asked further.

He was quiet for a moment before answering. "It can be good or bad, depending on the situation,"

"For example?"

"Well, if there's celebrations like parties and stuff, that's good. But if there's people fighting or arguing then it becomes bad." He replies. "How about you? What was life like in this village before all of this happened?"

"Well, it was quiet... boring. Especially since mother never let me out of the castle."

"Really? She just had you locked up in there? Why?" His tone was curious.

You nod, looking at him from your side. "Well, mother said that the townsfolk were dangerous people, she often called them slaves or savages. She would always tell me that noble people shouldn't mingle with commoners." Your statement left a bitter taste in Ethan's tongue, further amplifying his disdain towards your mother. "Especially men. Mother had such hatred for your kind that all of the workers in the house were women, she never allowed any man to set foot inside the castle. She would always tell me stories of how awful they are, and that I should never involve myself with any of them."

Ethan was torn on what to think about what you had said. A part of him thought that Lady Dimitrescu was right, there are men out there who were awful, and he had soon accepted that he couldn't trust any of them when he had Rose. Though, another part of him knew that there were good ones out there, few, but they existed.

"Is it true?" You ask, your voice had gotten quieter. "Are you men really that awful towards women?"

He didn't know what to say, and when you had noticed he had gotten quiet you looked at him. His gaze was focused on the ground, a frown etched on his face.

"Ethan?" You quietly called out to him and he looks back at you, the frown on his face not as obvious as before. You continued. "That's not true, is it?"

You poor thing. Your innocence was something Ethan found both refreshing and pitiful. You seemed so hopeful to see the good in people, and that people were nothing but good. If only that was the case, wasn't it? Then this world wouldn't be awful to live in.

"You need to be careful who you get yourself involved with, you don't know what's really going on in their head," Ethan vaguely replied.

You went silent of a moment, tearing your gaze away from him and to the direction ahead of you. "That did not answer my question,"

Ethan sighs, tearing his gaze away from you as his closed his eyes out in frustration to try and think of something to say. "...Yes, to an extent, your mother is right. There are plenty of men out there who are awful. That's why you have to be careful."

"How do I know who is and is not awful?"

"You won't, you won't until you're in too deep with them,"

"That's a terrifying thing to say. You mean that once I'm truly devoted and in love that's when I'll see what kind of a person someone is?"
