Fred felt like an asshole.
He'd promised his brother he would set him up with Y/n L/n. That he would get him to date the prettiest, smartest, nicest, funniest girl in their year - in all of Hogwarts. Even though he'd been the one who befriended her first. Even though he talked to her a lot more than George did.
Even though he's had a crush on her longer than George.
It was his own fault, really. If only he'd mentioned something two years ago, when he'd first gotten a crush on her, he wouldn't be in this predicament. Due to the bro-code, he had to step down and leave the space for George. As painful as it was.
Fred realized he was a terrible wingman.
''You okay, mate?'' He looked up from his toast and to his brother, the only reason he was feeling so guilty right now. ''You spaced out there.''
''Yeah, I'm fine. Was just thinking about how to improve the Skiving Snackboxes.'' Fred made up a quick lie; there was no way he'd come clean about what he was thinking.
And George. George wasn't dumb. He's known his brother since the womb - literally - there was no way he couldn't tell when Fred was lying. But seeing how down his brother seemed, George decided not to bother him. After all, if it was something serious, Fred would come to him for help.
''Oh, yeah, I sketched a design for the box yesterday night. I'll show you when we go back. Hello there, L/n.''
Fred looked up, seeing none other than Y/n standing behind the two of them, along with Michelle, one of her roommates. ''Weasley, Weasley, Jordan.'' She nodded to the three. ''Fred, Professor Sprout told me to hand you the notes from last lesson, since you weren't there.'' Fred remembered he'd skipped that class to prank Snape, even though it was the one class he really didn't want to skip.
She held the notes out in the middle and George grinned, grabbing them from her. ''Thanks, L/n. Really appreciate it.''
Y/n eyed him weirdly. ''Right. See you lot later.''
The twins watched her walk away; one with dreamy, one with sad eyes. She couldn't even tell them apart, could she?
''Here you go, mate.'' George handed Fred the parchment, who stuffed it in his bag with continued eating his toast. ''Man, you're lucky, you get to sit with L/n and even have her take notes for you? I'm jealous, really.''
''Yeah.'' Fred was quiet. Oddly quiet.
''Are you sure you're okay? You're acting really weird today, Freddie.'' George turned to Lee, who'd been quietly reading his Prophet. ''He's acting weird, right, Lee?''
''Yeah,'' Lee agreed, sipping his tea.
''See!'' George turned back to his brother.
''I told you, I'm fine. I just don't feel that well. I think I'm gonna go lay down for a bit, you two have fun in Transfiguration. Say hi to McGonagall for me, will you?'' Fred stood up, a smile on his face as he picked up another piece of toast and made his way out of the Great Hall, his bag slung over his shoulder.
George turned back to Lee. ''Something's very wrong with him. Why won't he tell me? Is it something about me?''
Lee had an inkling about Fred's problem, but he didn't think he should be the one to tell George. ''I'm sure whatever it is, he can figure it out on his own. You know he'll always tell you if something's bad.''
George took a deep breath and looked at Fred's empty seat next to him. ''Yeah, I hope so.''
