''We need to talk.''
Umbridge's class had just ended and Y/n had been one of the first ones to leave with her friends. Fred, George and Lee were surprised to see her standing in front of the Defence Against the Dark Arts classroom door without her friends in tow.
George, seizing the opportunity, stepped closer. ''Oh? I'd talk about anything with you, darling.''
Knowing George fancied her, Y/n tried her best not to cringe at his flirting. She cleared her throat, looking behind him. ''I want to talk with Fred, actually.''
George's eyes narrowed, looking back at his brother before going to his side and clapping him on the back. ''Sure thing! See you later, Freddie!''
Fred felt his stomach drop as he watched George walking away with a small smile on his face. Lee gave Fred a look, knowing his secret, and turned to follow after George. Once the two were out of sight, Fred turned back to Y/n. ''What do you wanna talk about?''
''What'd you do that for?''
Fred blinked. ''Pardon?''
Sighing in exasperation, Y/n grabbed Fred's wrist and led him away from Umbridge's classroom, deciding she'd rather not have the merciless teacher hear them. Fred simply let her lead him away without a protest. Once near the Great Hall, she finally let go of his wrist, leaving him to miss her slightly-tight touch.
''Why'd you try to defend me?'' Y/n questioned. ''You got yourself into trouble for nothing. Weren't we supposed to pretend you don't like me or something?''
''Just because I'm not supposed to like you doesn't mean I don't.'' Fred cleared his throat. He pulled on his tie, feeling it too tight around his neck all of the sudden. ''I'm not gonna let a hag treat you like this.''
''You-'' She looked like she wanted to yell at him, but she closed her eyes and took a deep breath before speaking again, calmly. ''Look. If you don't want to go out with me because of your brother, that's fine. But you gotta leave me alone. You gotta let me move on, got it, Weasley?''
''I . . .'' Fred, unsure of what to say, decided not to say anything.
Once she realized Fred wasn't going to respond, Y/n gave him a sad look before turning around. ''See you around.''
This time, Fred didn't watch her walk away. He'd decided it hurt enough seeing her once. So he turned around and walked down the opposite corridor, clutching his bag.
Fred wasn't a bad person. He believed that, at least. Sure, he was a prankster, but he knew where to draw the line. He's a good brother - for the most part - and he's a good son; he liked to believe he was a good friend as well.
So why did the universe have to put him in such a situation?
''We gotta talk, mate.''
Fred trudged into his dorm after taking a walk around the Black Lake to think, looking up from his shoes once he opened the door and seeing Lee standing in the middle of the room - George wasn't there, so Fred had an inkling of what he wanted to discuss.
''Where's George?'' asked Fred as he threw his backpack on the ground next to his bed and faced Lee.
''Angelina called him over. Quidditch stuff, I think.'' Lee explained.
If I didn't know better, I'd think George has a crush on Angelina and not Y/n. If only that was the case. ''What do you wanna talk about?''
Lee sat down on his bed that was on the left side of Fred's, beckoning him to sit as well. ''What actually happened with Y/n earlier? Why did she want to talk to you after class?''
Fred remained silent for a moment. Lee already knew about his crush anyway, so it wouldn't hurt telling him, right? He wouldn't tell George, so he was safe. After taking that decision, Fred recited their conversation almost word by word, almost as if he'd been replaying it in his head the whole day.
''Godric,'' Lee finally spoke, starching the top of his head. ''That's a tough situation.''
''Tell me about it.'' Fred leaned his head on his hand, looking at Lee. ''I don't know what to do. George would be crushed if I tell him.'' Fred's jokester side wanted to laugh at his unintentional joke - he would be crushed after he finds out his crush doesn't like him back - but he knew it wasn't appropriate.
''Or maybe if you actually tell him what happened he'll understand because he's your brother and give you your blessing and you guys'll get married and all that shit.''
''This isn't some fairytale.'' Fred wished it was, but he wasn't five anymore. ''I'll just keep quiet for now. Who knows, maybe Y/n will forget about me and fall for George instead. And then they'll get married and all that shit.''
''What about you?''
What about me? ''I'll have fulfilled my role as a wingman. To an extend, I guess.''
Lee pursed his lips and exhaled out of his nose. ''How did this even happen?''
Fred shook his head. ''Dunno. That's life, I guess.'' He just had to deal with it, since he was a good brother.
The door suddenly opened and the two looked up, seeing an all smiley and giggley George walk in. Fred and Lee couldn't help but raise a brow. ''What's got you in such a good mood?'' Fred asked.
Lee let a smirk show on his face. ''Something with dear Captain Johnson?''
George scoffed. ''Nothing like that. She wanted to talk about Quidditch and then we just ended up talking about something different and I kinda lost track of time.'' However, his dopey grin didn't disappear from his face, raising Lee's suspicions.
''Anyway, what did Y/n want to talk about?'' George plopped down next to his brother in interest.
Fred shrugged. ''Just scolded me for getting attention with Umbridge as well. No big deal.'' Yeah, not at all.
George chuckled. ''Sounds like something she would do.''
There was a knock on the door. All boys were too lazy to get up so Lee called out, ''Come in.''
Ron walked in the dorm, closing the door behind him. ''Hey.''
''What brings you here, Ronnikins?'' George asked.
"Hermione sent me over to remind you about the Hogsmade meeting," Ron explained. "You didn't tell too many people, did you?"
"Who do you take us for?"
Ron decided to leave the room before the angers his brothers unnecessarily, closing the door behind him.
Fred's mind wandered off to Y/n. Did she know about it? They had to tell her, she would love the idea. But how would we tell her if she's avoiding us?
Avoiding me, at least.
