As expected, Paulina is avoiding my calls. To say I was in shock when Beau told me she was using my picture to sell herself is an understatement.
The thought of her picking up clients who think she looks like me is disturbing. It gives me body chills.
I rest my phone on the bedside cabinet after shutting down the power. The no-caller ID calls are still frequent, but I have more of a chance to get her to pick up if it's my number than if it's Beau's, so I keep turning it on every so often to contact her.
Beau is sleeping soundly next to me on his side with his hands pulled up underneath the pillow. It was a rough night for both of us. I'm happy to see him resting.
"I can sense your eyes," he says, a half-smile gracing his face.
Sliding up close to him, I kiss his nose. "I thought you were sleeping."
"No." He stretches out his long and lean body, stretching his limbs as he grunts. "Been awake for a while. I just wanted to give you some privacy."
My fingers brush across the stubble marking his face, enjoying the scratching sensation as it's thicker than usual. "Well, she's still not answering."
He sighs. "Maybe try when we get back?"
"Yeah, that's probably going to be my only option at this point," I say, sneaking into the warm space he opens up for me, groaning when he's forced to roll over to answer his ringing mobile phone.
The uncomfortable, twisty, turny sensation in my gut sets off again, anticipating who is calling him. Beau answers, frowning right afterwards, pushing up to rest his back against the headboard.
"I'm taking some annual leave this weekend with Sienna," he says, setting off those anxious feelings again.
His chest hitches as he holds his arm out for me, resting his lips on my head once I snuggle close. "No, that won't be an option. I need to get home," he says, stroking my bare shoulder as whoever speaks down the line becomes agitated enough to shout. "Yes, I'm aware I signed a contract, but something big has come up, and I can't go."
I watch him scrunch his lips up, shaking his head. "That's absolute bullshit, Karen. Surely they can swap a few dates around?"
When he scoffs, I turn and press my hand against his chest so he knows I'm here. The gentle thrashing of his heart hinting at his annoyance.
"So, you're telling me I have no choice?" he murmurs, already beating himself up by the torn expression on his face.
"It's okay." I press several kisses against his tense neck. "This is your job. It's okay."
I'm not sure how long we stare at each other before he speaks again, but the loud voice down the line tells me it's been a while. Once he puts the phone down, he cups my cheeks and lowers his forehead to mine.
