"Todoroki Shoto!"

Of course, everyone's eyes turned to him the second he ascended the stairs for his sorting. Todoroki pulled the hat down to cover his eyes, shutting them for extra measure in blocking out the stunned or piercing gazes sent his way, and the sorting began.

"Todoroki Shoto. I was wondering when you would begin to walk the halls of Hogwarts." the hat's voice appeared in his head. "Hmm, big shoes to fill indeed. Your father a top rate auror, your mother an esteemed herbologist before her untimely... sickness." the hat phrased carefully, noting the sudden tenseness in the boy's shoulders. "Where to put you indeed..."

It was quiet in the hall, everyone looking at the hat and waiting for the big reveal. The Todoroki name was well-known in the wizarding world for turning out the best of the best in every generation of the family; yet, little was known about the personal lives of the Todorokis. They never allowed interviews and rarely went out in public if it wasn't for business, meaning they were shrouded in mystery. And now the youngest son of Enji Todoroki, named Endeavour for his rapid rise to success in becoming Head Auror, was to begin his schooling at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

Every house wanted Todoroki Shoto, everyone wanted the Todoroki name.

"I see a will to prove yourself, and to move beyond the shadow of your family name. There is determination I see, and a sharp mind trained to excellence. But you are lonely, you want a group of people to call your own, who will see and embrace who you are. Every part of you. Where to put you... Gryffindor would be the ultimate choice of course, just as your father and his father before him, but your mother truly excelled in Ravenclaw... But what about you? What does your future hold? Let's see..."

The hat opened its mouth and everyone in the hall leaned closer too.

"I think... Gryffindor!"

Well, one less thing for his father to complain about.

The red and gold house erupted into cheers, waving their banners to and fro as the boy descended the stairs to join them at their table. Todoroki saw many hands thrust towards him and he quickly returned them before sitting at the end of a table, trying to not draw any more attention to himself. It was a warm feeling to have those in his new house welcome him so kindly, but the nagging part of his brain was telling him that was because he was simply a Todoroki.

"Hi there!"

Turning from the next child being sorted, Shoto looked across the table to find a girl with shocking pink hair grinning at him. She almost had a pink tint to her skin too, and he wondered if it was genetic or a potion gone wrong.

"Hello." he greeted politely.

"I'm Mina Ashido! You're the famous Todoroki, eh?!"

"Mhm. But please, call me Shoto."

"Shoto it is! So, what are you excited to learn about?" she asked loudly, voice dropping only slightly when a teacher glared across the room at them. "I'm super excited for transfiguration. Just think, one minute its a button and the next a crystal-studded necklace!"

He couldn't help the slight smile that graced his features as she talked so excitedly about all the things they could learn whilst at Hogwarts. Personally, he was most looking forwards to Charms and Care of Magical Creatures, wanting to learn more about fun spells or cute creatures, not how to defend yourself from dark wizards with hexes he'd memorised since childhood.

They continued a light discussion until the sorting was over and several more students joined Gryffindor house. A few of them seemed wary to approach him, but he still held a hand out in greeting and hoped his expression was approachable. His brother used to say he always looked stony or annoyed, something he had been working on subtly ever since.
