— LILY DEMARS WAS UNDOUBTEDLY ONE of the most important people in Saya's life. From the moment they got paired up for a science project in fourth grade, the two girls were destined to never leave each other's sides. They kept each other afloat when the tides grew too strong, always being there to keep their best friend's head above the water. No matter the situation, Lily had been there, just as Saya was for her.

So it was extremely understandable that Lily had been ever-so-slightly distraught by the current state of her female best friend. As Lily picked at her cuticles, and Alex distracted himself with Subway Surfers, she let her brain become consumed with worry.

It wasn't utterly uncharacteristic for Saya to be like this, and yet no matter how much Lily reassured herself that Saya's attitude would be nothing but sunshine and rainbows tomorrow, the thought that something might truly be wrong picked away at her sanity.

Fifteen or so minutes of worrying floated away, though, when Saya came skipping back to their table. Aside from fiddling around with a food container that both Lily and Alex alike were perplexed by, Saya Han was completely back to normal. Alex still assumed she was internally cussing out their teacher for that art project, but at least the anger had dialled down and was no longer external as well.

The day went on like normal after that, and Saya's abrupt departure during lunch had quickly been pushed to the very back of their minds. But just as Alex hypothesized, Saya could not stop thinking of the project. She had been zoned out for the next three and a half hours, missing every time Lily slapped Alex's head to stop him from doing something stupid, not learning anything in the classes that followed, and even missing the wave Mateo sent her way in the parking lot after spotting the girl getting on her bus.

Nothing seemed coherent until she got home, the smell of a vanilla candle bringing her back to earth.

Saya shouted to her sister, making it known that she was back home. After receiving a yell in response, and upon knowing that her sister was aware of her presence, Saya headed to her room to prematurely mourn her art mark a little more.

Saya hated art class.

Despite being in the Visual Arts department and quite literally only attending her current school due to her interest in the arts, she still despised art class. (She didn't actually hate it, she was just having a difficult time with this one assignment and decided that it meant this entire class was a burden to the world.)

After sharpening another pencil down to the ferrule and accidentally ripping another paper by erasing a bad sketch too aggressively, Saya abandoned her desk in favour of her bed.
