' what friends are for '

— SAYA WAS EXHAUSTED. As excited as she was for her day trip with Jake, getting up at 6:30 and leaving the house at 7:45 on a Saturday morning was not how she wanted to start her weekend.

She had gotten to the bus stop a little earlier, and filled the time by listening to all the songs Jake had recommended to her over the past few days. Saya couldn't say their music tastes were exactly aligned, but she did find a song or two that she surprisingly really enjoyed.

Four and a half songs passed before Jake showed up, a mini backpack slung over both his shoulders. Saya glanced down at her handbag and wondered if maybe she should've brought a larger carry-on.

"Good morning, Sy!" Despite being eight in the morning, Jake was as peppy as ever, a permanent grin drawn on his face. He looked like a child as he bounced on his feet, hands secured tightly around the straps of his bag. The anticipation in his bones was very evident, and Saya felt like a drained mother as she tried to get him to sit down with her.

"So, I thought we could go to breakfast first," Jake started, pulling out his phone. Saya peeked over to see him opening the notes app, a list of activities spelled out on the note he'd written. "If you haven't already had it—?"

Saya shook her head, and Jake quietly celebrated before continuing to explain his plans for the day. It seemed as though Jake had been waiting for a moment like this all his life, from the way his legs shook with restlessness, the full-page note he had to lay out their entire day, the smile on his face that still hadn't faded (Saya was starting to worry that he'd get stuck like that) it was clear that Jake was in need of a getaway like this.

"Sounds good to me," Saya said, standing up as the bus approached. Jake followed her actions, bouncing slightly on his toes as the bus rolled to a stop.

The two got onto the vehicle, picking a spot near the back. Jake stole the window seat, and Saya made sure to give his shoulder a good slap for doing so. The bus took off before Saya had fully sat down, and as she fell into her seat, Jake had to forcefully suppress his laugh with both of his hands.

Despite the glare she sent him for finding humour in her despair, Saya was internally very thankful for his reaction. Jake was notoriously an extremely kind person, so as he laughed at her rubbing knee to subdue the pain from her fall, she was sure he considered her a friend. A true friend. Not someone he hung out with when his other friends were busy or someone he paired up with in a class he didn't share with any of his friends— he considered their relationship a genuine friendship.

"Ah shoot, I forgot my headphones," Though he had muttered it almost silently, Saya perked up at his statement. She pulled one of her earbuds out, making sure it was the one that worked better than the other, before holding it out to him. Jake looked at the small device, then at her, and back to the earphone.
