CHAPTER EIGHTEEN
SAYA
────────────
' outside of that cinema '—SAYA HAN KNEW THAT REALISTICALLY, Jake Sim was far from perfect, but that didn't prevent her from considering him to be so.
She had no other explanation for why he'd willingly take a newly heartbroken girl to the movies to help get her mind off of some jock she barely even got to know. He took her feelings more seriously than she did. Saya didn't know what she'd done to deserve a type of person like Jake.
They'd gotten to the movie theatre no more than three minutes ago. Saya had been pestering Jake about the film they were about to see, but with the tickets held above their heads and out of her reach, Jake vehemently refused to tell her. Even now, as they made their way up to the concession stand, Jake had their admission hidden in his pocket. Saya scowled at the cheeky smile he unashamedly boasted.
But she let go of her interrogations. After all, Jake had bought both of their tickets and was now also offering to pay for both of their snacks— the least she could do was let him hold onto his surprise.
"Should we just get some popcorn?" Jake queried, "It's a staple for scary movies."
Saya froze. "Scary movies? Jake, are we watching a horror flick?"
"Mhm!" He grinned. Before Saya could fully admire his genuine bliss, he dropped the smile into a much less heartwarming smirk and leaned towards her. "Why? Are you scared?"
Saya blinked.
After a moment, she slowly pushed him away. "You're one to talk, Sim. Didn't you get scared of a piece of pollen the other day?"
"I thought it was a bee!"
Saya scoffed, and their scuffle was put on pause as Jake ordered their popcorn and drinks. The second he had passed Saya her Coke, her picked up right where they left off.
"Bees are perfectly reasonable things to be afraid of," Jake argued as he handed their tickets off. The two slips of paper were torn before being given back to Jake, who stuffed them into his pocket once more before guiding Saya to the right theatre.
"Except that it wasn't a bee—"
"How was I supposed to know that!?"
The Bee-That-Wasn't-Actually-A-Bee conversation had led them into their designated theatre, and even as they found their seats, Jake would not let go of his defence; Just as he hadn't let go of their tickets to let Saya know about the movie that was mere minutes away from playing.
"It's okay, Jake. Being afraid isn't a bad thing," Saya assured him. She took his drink out of the cup holder between them and reached over to place it in the armrest on his other side instead. "If you get scared, you can just hold my hand."
