Moana was frustrated with herself. She'd been given an opportunity to get them all out, and she'd blown it. How were they going to get out this time?
Woody and Buzz had gotten into Jack's cell again to attempt to use their lockpick on the chains. While it worked fine on the cell door, the chain's lock was different somehow, and Woody couldn't pick it.
Things were starting to look pretty hopeless. She was wondering if there was anything they even could do. Before her negative train of thought could continue, however, she heard two voices outside the door.
"Do you hear that?" Nala said, standing up. Nearly everyone turned their attention to the door. Was it Daniels again?
The door swung open slowly. Moana squinted, trying to see who was behind it. She quickly realized, to her delight, that it was not Daniels.
They were the kids she'd seen outside. They stared at her for a second before the boy practically screamed.
"Moana? Oh my gosh, you're like my favorite character ever! How did you get in here?"
"Uh, hi. How do you know my name?"
The girl screamed, causing her friend to turn around and do the same. They'd both seen Jack, who was surprised to see them (although clearly flattered by their reaction). Once they'd composed themselves, the girl lost it.
"Jack Skellington? I love your movie! It's so cool to meet you!"
"Thank you...wait, movie? Don't you mean holiday?"
"What's going on?" Nala called from her cell. The kids proceeded to freak out over her, as well as the toys and Lightning McQueen.
It took a few minutes before the kids could actually speak to the prisoners. "Sorry about that." The girl looked a little sheepish. "My name's Red Ramos. This is my friend, Marty Kasango. We've seen all of your movies, and we've always wanted to meet you."
"What do you mean 'our movies'?" Buzz asked.
"Okay," Red started, "this is going to sound really weird, but..."
For the next few minutes, she explained how all of their stories were known, as well as loved, in their world. Those stories were told by a company that called themselves Disney.
"Marty and I have seen all of your movies, and that's how we know who you are. But how did you get here?"
"We were stolen," Woody told them, "by a guy named Daniels. We don't know how he found us in the first place, but he wants to turn us into a tourist trap."
"Okay, that's the craziest thing I've ever heard." Marty muttered. He took a strange tool (what Moana later learned was called a bobby pin) out of his pocket and started to look at the locks on the cell holding Woody, Buzz, and Jack. "Let's get you out of here."
"Do what you can." Jack encouraged him. "I'm afraid we haven't had any luck with the locks on the chains."
"Don't worry about that." Bobby pin in hand, Marty messed around with the lock until it opened and fell to the floor. The chain fell from the cell door, and Jack was able to push it open.
"Perfect!" The skeleton took Marty's hand and shook it. Red nearly laughed as her friend was knocked off balance by the vigorous shake. Once he was steady, he released Moana and Nala. McQueen, however, quickly proved to be a problem.
"Daniels did something to my engine when he carnapped me," the race car admitted to the kids, "and because of that, I can't drive."
Everyone stood for a moment. Moana and Nala were staring at McQueen, while the others tried to think of a plan. Finally, Red snapped her fingers.
"We'll take you to my house. It's not too far from here; if we all pitch in, we can push you there. Then I'll call my sister. She's a mechanic; she'll know how to fix you."
"I thought you said she didn't get off until six." Marty pointed out.
"I'll tell her it's an emergency. I know her, she'll come. Now come on, everyone." She got behind McQueen. "We need to get moving."
The toys weren't much help, as McQueen was easily ten times their weight. But Jack and Nala were surprisingly strong, so with the added help of Moana and the kids, they managed to push the car surprisingly quickly.
All the same, they were all anxious as they made their way out of the hall. True, the kids said that they'd seen Daniels leave, but they'd spent a while unlocking cell doors. What if he'd come back?
They all moved cautiously, with McQueen keeping a very careful watch. Still, they all nearly had a simultaneous heart attack when a voice started to speak up. Everyone froze, and it took Moana a second to realize that the voice wasn't speaking, but singing. Red seemed to realize this, too, and looked around. She actually laughed when she saw the source of the sound, and held it up for the others to see.
"Apparently, Daniels has a clock radio. He must have set it so he'd leave for work on time." She turned it off.
"What's a clock radio?" Nala asked. Moana wondered the same thing.
"I'll explain later." Marty promised. "We need to keep moving."
_ _ _
They all pushed McQueen through the garage door, and out into the street. From there, Red promised that it was a mere ten minutes to her house. While this cheered them all up, it still took a second for Jack, Nala, and McQueen to adjust to the sunlight after spending several hours (at least) locked up.
It was while they were making their way down the street that McQueen began to feel uneasy. After all, as strange as it was for him to see non-living cars and humans (not to mention lions and skeletons), it must have been just as strange for humans to see him. Granted, Red and Marty were clearly fans (something he was used to), but still, if someone saw them...
"Don't worry about that," Red assured him when he asked if they should be in the open, "we'll just say we're Disney super fans working on an art project."
"But won't someone think it's weird that two middle school kids are pushing a car down the street?"
"Dude," Marty responded, "it's Florida."
