I'm on my way to Benin right now, and I'm really not feeling good about this. One, because I still can't get what happened on my way from Ekiti out of my head, two because I left home around 2pm and Benin road has a reputation of kidnappings and arm robbery. Three because I didn't like the noise from the bus. The bus seemed like it will stop moving anytime. And yes my dramatic Yoruba mom couldn't stop hugging me when she saw the damage done to the car and I came home without a scratch. Of course she agreed once that I was going to Uniben to do the jupep program. To cut the long story short, I'm on my way to settle down for the entrance exam which is in 2 days time. I could not help but shrink anytime a trailer passed us.
The journey has been normal so far until we got to a checkpoint.....I don't know where it was but I was sure we were far from Owo. The bus slowed down for the soldiers to do their normal thing, only for the bus to move then my village people arrived. The bus refused to move.
Now, let me remind you that Benin road is well known for the reputation for kidnappings and armed robbery.I immediately switched to prayer mode. Looking around, the passengers were not even helping matters, seated behind me were three abokis, I knew they were abokis because of the way they were dressed and the way they spoke. Beside me was a guy with long dreads, who might I add, has been making weird eye contact with me since the journey started. Seated beside him is a girl on earpiece.....she didn't even care about what was going on.
Onto the next seat was a woman who has been protecting her frame since, Even the slightest jerk from the car made her shout. Beside her were two women we picked from Ijare. Chai! these women were extremely loud for one, and two the way they were dressed was something else. God please forgive me if it's a sin. It was actually obvious that they were Benin from their thick accent. At the front beside the driver was a young man, he would be in his late twenties. He has been receiving calls since the beginning of the journey
"Abeg make una help
me push this bus" The driver said in pidgin. Soon, the guys in the bus got down to push the bus, even some abokis sitting by the road joined in pushing the bus and soon, the bus started moving again.I didn't know when I slept off and I didn't know what woke me up either, all I know was that I sighted the driver outside the bus...... literally running after it.......no one was sitting at the driver's seat. Oh God!. I was about to panic when I saw one of the abokis trying to jump out of the bus through the window. I didn't know when I started laughing. Like how could he even think of jumping through that hole.
Omo!, I didn't know how the driver was able to get control of the bus but I Know that after some minutes, we got moving again. A lot of things happened on my way to Benin but I won't talk about everything.
There's one more I need to talk about. Like I really need to talk about this. Our bus broke down close to a checkpoint in Benin. The bus driver said he needed to fuel the bus so we all had to drop to stretch our legs. People started boarding different busses saying the location we were staying was very dangerous. Omo na once panic grip me. I think the frame lady noticed my fear.
"Don't worry, nothing bad will happen, and if anything bad wants to happen, the policemen will help us." She says.
"I hope so"I say
"Please help me hold my frame I need to ease myself" she says
"Alright ma" I say collecting the frame for her.
"Hi" it was the guy that was seated at the passengers seat. He was actually good looking. He'll be an Igbo guy, he definitely didn't look Yoruba and didn't sound like one.
"Hi" I replied....so I wouldn't seem unfriendly
"Sorry, are you Igbo" he asks and I just started laughing.....me..... Igbo ke?
"No I'm not, as a matter of fact, I'm Yoruba" I say.
"Wow, I didn't know Yoruba girls were this beautiful" he says. Alright that's cap. But since I was bored I decided to flow along with him and soon the driver came back.
"I really enjoyed your company......and I most definitely would like to talk to you again.....so can I have your number?" He says.
"Yeah, no issues" I say typing my number in the phone..... I know it's an iPhone but I don't know the name or type.
Now everyone got into the car and the driver started fueling the car but again.........the car started moving.
"Step on the brake" the frame woman said to the guy in the passengers seat who by now, I knew his name was David.
"Apply the brakes now" I nervously said but my guy didn't even answer, he just jumped out of the bus.
God only knows how the driver stopped the bus. I honestly felt like killing somebody. Beautiful girl indeed! David almost killed me literally and if I had died, he would not have seen me again. And that's what's up..... he's never going to hear from me again.
"Ekosodin junction?" The driver asked interrupting my thoughts for the 100 millionth time today.
"Driver stop" I shouted, grateful that I got to my destination safe and probably sound. I dropped my bags.
"Bye Kenny" David said smiling smugly.....I have a wicked tight lipped smile back. Soon my phone rang. Probably my sister to know my whereabout. Thank God I won't have to stay here for long.
"How far? I just stopped at ekosodin junction o" I said with excitement.
"Yeah I know I saw you alighting the bus" David. I didn't even reply him, I just ended the call and blocked the line. Again my phone rang again
"Hello Kenny.....are you putting on a blue shirt" I hear my sister's voice at the other end.
"Yes"i say looking around if I could see her.
"Okay I can see you" she says and a minute later I and my sister were jumping and hugging each other. She ordered bolt and I was excited by how lively the streets were. Uniben, please be nice.
