"...in order for you to obtain a position in the local team for disaster relief, you'll need..."

It's been almost four days since Beck had made that comment about breath control or whatever. I've avoided him at all costs.

He's been over my house for Eris a few times but, we've not spoken a word except for the awkward; excuse me or oh, sorry. Those were used when we would be walking through the kitchen or the hallway upstairs or out of the bathroom.

Eleanor has a date tonight with Beck at the Roller rink and unfortunately, Meredith is forcing me to tag along with her as we casually-not-so-casually spy on them.

I'd rather be at home with my snacks, in my sweats while watching Big Brother or Love Island. Either one is better than the night spontaneously planned ahead.

Earlier today when Mere and I were over at Eleanor's, helping her plan out her outfit and whatnot...

Well, that was Mere, I just sprawled out on Leanor's gigantic circle shaped bed.

I'm certain they had noticed my zoning out and whatnot.

Doctor Strange probably noticed from another dimension.

I'm kidding.

Obviously.

Although, I wouldn't be surprised. I'm zoning out right now in class.

"Elaine Dearly" says Mr Weiss.

My head snaps to the front of the class as I'm sure I resemble a deer in headlights, "yes?"

"What date must your expression of interest be handed in by?" he questions with his eyebrows raised.

I tilt my head and reply, "um... for what?"

"The local disaster relief team"

With my mouth agape, I'm sure, I answer, "ohh, gotcha"

He crosses his arms and sighs excessively loud, "June 10, Miss Dearly, were you listening to a single thing I've said all lesson?"

"Umm... no" I mumble as I fidget with my pen.

"If you can manage to collect all the notes before tomorrow's lesson you'll avoid detention"

I go to express my grief just as the bell rings, signalling fourth period. Giving up with a sigh, I stand to gather my things just as Bridger Laughlin, one of Beck's team mates, stands by me with a smile.

"Hey, Elaine" he smiles. He has a nice smile but, I've kind of got my sights set on someone else.

"Oh, hey Bridger, what's up?"

"Oh uh, I was just gonna offer to lend my notes so, grumpy ole' Weissman doesn't cast you off" he laughs and ruffles his hair.

I'd be lying if I said he's not somewhat attractive. Very, very attractive. His blue eyes and sandy blonde hair, although not my usual 'type' but, he's also very sweet. Lucky Brandy Kravitz. His girlfriend.

She's very outgoing and loves when Bridger receives compliments. I guess, they're just that solid.

"Are you for real?"

He nods slowly as he chuckles, "yeah, of course, just bring my notebook back tomorrow and we're cool"

With a grateful smile and a quick Elaine-awkward side hug, "thankyou thankyou thankyou!"

I place the book onto mine as I wave and make my way out of class, he smiles and turns back to his friends.

Bridger is usually quiet during class or well, anything. He's like the typical boy next door. Too bad my boy next door is an asshole. Actually, he's the entire ass.

Oof!

I'm suddenly knocked back and before I hit the cliche floor, a cliche arm wraps around my back and as cliche as it is, I'm whisked back onto my feet standing a mere inch from the most cliche person ever.

"Are you serious, right now?" I mumble as try to steady myself.

"Sorry Laine, I guess I should stop trying to kill you, huh" he smirks and I scoff as I push away from his chest.

Much to my dismay, he locks his grip on my side as he says, "did you know that when two people coincidentally run into one another, it's apparently this thing called fate"

"Oh yeah? Are you sure because I thought it was hate" I give a questioning gaze, "you know fate but, with an h"

He laughs as he lets go. I find my footing and straighten out my shirt.

"What are you even doing here, right now? Aren't you going to class?"

He places a hand on his heart and I automatically roll my eyes, "aww, you care, Lainey"

"Gross, I could care less, actually " I hold my books to my chest tighter as I feel my face becoming hot and I turn towards the open hall.

He clicks his tongue before continuing, "no, actually uh, I've got a family thing so, my mother is collecting me"

I nod and I wonder what the problem could be or if it's even a problem to begin with. Maybe, it's just something fun and spontaneous.

There's that darn word again.

Spontaneous.

It seems everyone is into spontaneity.

"Uh well, I gotta go so, I'll catch you later, Laine" he places his fist to my cheek and clicks his tongue as he usually does when we part ways.

"Laters, Beckers"

He chuckled as he makes his way down the hall.

I now realise that I'm late to class.

-

"So, Eleanor is already gone home, her mother picked her up so, it's just me and you, El" Mere smiles cheerfully as she links her arm with mine.

We make our way to her car as we jump in she starts it. I notice her well manicured nails and the smell of roses.

I think as far as I know the only person who wears rose scented perfume is Lillian Sawyer, as well as, those French tipped nails.

It makes me curious but, I don't question as I return her smile and we head off out of the parking lot.

"I say; can you believe it..." she sings along to Taylor Swift as she drives along.

I fidget with the end of my skirt and look out over the scenery. I've always lived here, I was born here. I've only ever been to San Francisco and Los Angeles. They were for dance competitions back when I was younger and actually still performed.

I guess I just grew out of it.

"Hey Mere?"

She sings louder as she focuses on the road and casually checks her makeup in the rearview mirror.

"Mere" I say louder and she turns the volume on the radio down.

"Sorry, yeah? What's up?"

I take a second to think about what exactly it is I want to say but, I can't and I quite frankly cannot be bothered.

If she's hanging out with Lillian then that's her choice but, I guess I'm not sure if Eleanor would have joined them or not.

I suppose I understand why they wouldn't invite me along but, it still feels odd.

"Oh nothing, I just thought about what's going down tonight, it's exciting " I smile tightly as she gushes.
