The drive home was quick and a peaceful silence had settled. I grabbed the bag with our food and we started to head inside when Monty got a phone call. He looked at the caller ID and his eyes darkened immediately after seeing who it was.
"You go ahead, I'll be up in a few minutes. I have to take this." He tossed me the keys and I hesitantly caught them before going ahead. I got maybe halfway to the elevator before I heard the sickening sound of skin breaking and bones crunching. I turned around only to see the guys from the auction house, stabbing Monty through the chest with a stake. I dropped the food and fell to my knees, tears streaming down my cheeks relentlessly. It felt like my entire world was crumbling and I knew that I would have to get to the apartment before they noticed me. I ran to the stairwell, knowing the elevator would take too long to get to the lobby. I took them two at a time and got to our place in five minutes and locked the door behind me, fumbling with the lock a bit. I whipped my phone out to call Grey. The phone rang three times then went straight to voicemail.
"Grey, I need you to call me back, your plan just took a turn for the worse. They killed him." I could barely breathe at this point and didn't know what to do. I slid down to the floor, completely lost. We were going to get on a plane tonight. In less than twelve hours the two of us would've been home free. It was going so well, why did they even kill him? He bought me, he had to have paid or he wouldn't have been allowed in to pick me up. We had the entire act set, I put on such a show for them so I could be happy later. Thoughts like those had me going into a downward spiral of blame and depression. Suddenly I heard someone knocking on the door so I pulled myself together and went to open it. I looked through the peephole before opening it to make sure it wasn't those assholes here to get me. Whoever it was, they were covering it from the other side so I could see anything. I padded back to kitchen and grabbed the sharpest knife we had, which happened to be the smallest, before going back to open the door. I hid the knife behind me and opened it a little crack. It was just our next door neighbor, a cute old lady that always made cookies and gave some to us before I was bought. Her name was Genevieve and I always had the urge to hug her.
"Hi Mrs.Trilby, what can I do for you?" I asked, struggling to keep my voice steady.
"Oh dear, I told you to call me Jenny. And I thought I heard crying so I came to see if everything was alright. Is Monty here?" She questioned me with concern evident in her voice. I shook my head and gave her the biggest smile I could muster up. She could never say his name right.
"No, he had an emergency at work and had to go in for a bit, but I'm hoping he'll be home soon." I responded, holding in the tears as best I could. My phone started ringing and I excused myself from the door after saying goodbye, to answer it. The caller ID was a screenshot from one of times I faced timed with Grey. I hastily answered, needing to hear a voice of reason before I snapped.
"Hello Violet, do you miss us already?" The icy voice of Nickolas floated through the receiver. I dropped the phone, too shocked to understand why he was calling from Grey's phone. I then picked it back up, livid that they not only killed the man I had fallen for in such a short amount of time, but also the only person I trusted in a very long time before Monty. I knew at that point, that I had snapped, and there was going to be hell to pay.
