📍the montauk cliffs

i sat at the edge of a cliff, just admiring the sunset. my siblings ran around near the car, playing tag.

my phone rang. it was dylan.

"hey babe." he said.

"hi, what's up?"

"so, i was thinking. when you get back from montauk, wanna go on a date?" he asked.

"sounds great." i said.

another call was coming in.

from shay.

so i left dylan on hold, for the first time ever.

"shay?" i asked.

"olivia, thank god." she said.

"what's up?"

"i still love you. so much. i can't get you out of my head."

"shay, i wasn't yours to lose. you were mine to lose."

"maybe it makes me a fool then. because i miss you."

"i'm sorry shay. but i just can't."

"i know."

"liv!! come on we're leaving!" my brother called out.

"shay, i have to go." i said.

"bye." she said.

i hung up.

i stood up to look over my shoulder, to where the car sat.

it wasn't there anymore. the parking lot was empty, no sign of anyone. i turned back to the edge of the cliff, stumbling a bit.

i tapped on dylan's call.

"dylan? i'm back. can you come get me?" i asked.

"that's like an hour drive. it's late olivia." he said.

"i think my family just left without me." i said.

"that's odd. why would they?"

"i don't know."

"i can't come get you, but call an uber. i love you."

"goodbye." i said, hanging up without saying i love you back.

that's when i realized that my family was never there to begin with. i walked here on my own. i walked here to a cliff. 7 hours and 52 minutes, i walked.

i stood, looking down.

i will never fall in love again, until i find shay rudolph.
