cold dinner | yanfei x reader

the minute hand on the clock ticked by more slowly than usual as the hour hand crept its way to 1. you had promised yanfei that you would be home 5 hours earlier at the latest but the home was still empty save for yanfei.

yanfei had prepared a hot meal for you, expecting that you'd be home for dinner and starving after completing your commission, but the silken tofu and stew had gone cold a long time ago. yanfei had tried to pass the time with no worries because she believed that maybe your commission was running later than usual. she re-recited the laws of liyue, measured a few objects on her scale, and read a new book from xingqiu when she finally looked up at the clock and realized how late it was getting.

although she wasn't worried before, the anxiety was building up quickly now.

is y/n's commission supposed to take this long? the exact words were 'i'll be back by 8 at latest for dinner," so does that mean they expected it to take long? they must have been expecting to be home by a normal dinner time. was the commission a favor for someone that involved fighting or something else? should i ask katheryne about y/n?

yanfei paced the floor of the living room back and forth, analyzing the words you said before you waved goodbye to her. but no matter how much she thought about what you said, she couldn't come to any sort of conclusion.

"right, maybe i should go to katheryne and ask her," yanfei decided.

"or maybe it's best to just wait for y/n," yanfei changed her mind.

"but i could get a result faster by asking katheryne," yanfei realized again.

as she went back and forth between staying and leaving, she heard the door creak open.

"yanfei..."

yanfei looked towards the opened door and rushed towards you. it was a terrible sight.

even though it was dark outside, your condition was clearly horrible. you leaned against the frame of the door as you croaked out yanfei's name. your hair was a mess and your expression was one of excruciating pain. the light from the house illuminated the blood you were covered in. yanfei couldn't tell whose blood it was, but the way you clutched your side was a clue. the moment yanfei had you in her arms, you immediately collapsed into them and she dragged you to a bed, peppering you with questions.

"y/n? what happened? who did this to you? when did this happen? what commission made you go through this?"

you rasped out, "water." and yanfei ran to get you some along with bandages and ointments.

she handed you the water and you drained it immediately.

"i'm sorry," yanfei apologized, "i don't have much for your wounds but some bandages and a few antiseptic ointments. i'd call for baizhu but i don't think he'd come out right now. just bear with me for a little bit."

yanfei carefully peeled off your clothes and gasped when she saw the gaping wound on your side. it was a large gash created from an extremely sharp edge and there burn wounds everywhere. she felt your forehead and although she had some resistance to heat, she could feel that you were completely burning up.

yanfei wasn't one to curse much, but at a time like this she couldn't help but slip one out: "shit."

she took a clean rag with cool water and started cleaning up your wounds and laying them along your burns. you winced at the pain which only made yanfei wince along with you. luckily, you looked much better once you were cleaned up. she laid a cool towel on your forehead to ease your fever before getting to work on your cut.

"i'm sorry, yanfei," you gasped as yanfei applied an ointment to the wound, "you must've waited for me for such a long time. never thought that i'd be attacked by a fatui agent out of nowhere. wanted revenge-" you inhaled sharply "-for his brother. i let his brother off easier than this though."

yanfei shook her head as she wrapped the bandage around your torso. "you don't need to apologize for anything. although i was and am worried, i only want to make you feel better."

yanfei continued to dress your wounds and tried to apply a burn cream made out of slime condensate. she knew that there was always a chance of accidentally burning someone with her pyro powers, so she always had an ointment on hand. the cool feeling must have been soothing because you seemed to look more relaxed.

you tried to explain the commission to yanfei as she applied the cream everywhere, "some guy wanted me to take a pendant back that an agent stole. i didn't have to do much to get it back, just pointed my weapon at him and he was scrambling away, leaving the pendant behind. i was goin' back to the harbor when his brother attacked me saying that i'd get what i deserved. never saw it coming. but he let me go with the pendant after giving me a beating. really is quite beautiful. i luckily got it in my pocket right now so i'll return it tomorrow."

"you are not going to be returning it tomorrow," yanfei declared. her emerald eyes bore into yours. "you are going to stay home and i will be taking care of the commission for you."

you whined. "but i need to."

she shook her head in response. "what you need to do is stay in bed and get your fever down. i'm going to bring baizhu here tomorrow to take a look at you."

you pouted. (how could you pout even in this situation?) "fine."

once yanfei finished applying the cream everywhere, she started to get a soup going for your fever. however, when she came back with the finished soup, she saw that you had fallen asleep already. she would have woken you up, but seeing how you were deep in your slumber, she decided against it.

"you must be so tired," she murmured as she sat beside you and started to gently pat your head, "i wish i could have helped you back there."

yanfei moved her hand and put it against your cheek, watching as you nuzzled against it and mumbled softly, "love you, yanfei."

she sighed and pressed a kiss on your forehead. "i love you too, y/n."

⁀➷ ajshjajd it's been so long since i've taken a request so i hope you enjoyed it and that it wasn't too short! yanfei's an interesting character that i didn't know much about and i never really pulled for her on purpose (i think i first got her during the zhongli rerun) but after reader her voicelines and teapot lines, she's so cute!
