Chapter 3: Arrival
Lana stretched in her bed, her joints creaking in protest. The last couple of days she had spent in blissful house suspension. A teacher was to stand guard in front of her door and hound her whenever she stepped out. They weren't taking any risks.
"What's up, Princess? Queen-sized stuffed bed too uncomfortable for you?"
Oh, yeah. She almost forgot that her little hellhole was a party for three.
Lana could feel Cole's gorgeous gray eyes burning holes into her back from his spot all the way across the bedroom. Reed was currently in the bathroom, relieving himself of the bad taco a certain someone had tricked him into eating.
Cole's eyes narrowed. Damn, does that guy have a built-in thought detector that sifts for anything Cole-related?
Because he was always reacting negatively when Lana thought of him in a not-so-positive light. Which, to be honest, was every single second of every single day.
Lana snorted, turning her back in him. Why he and his friend had to stay in here with her every second of every day until their arrival was beyond her understanding. As if the creeper outside her room wasn't enough, now she had to deal with two juvenile idiots whose vocabularies only consisted of girls, food, sports, girls, food, and girls.
What a wonderful way to start off her first year at her new school.
"What's up?"
Lana rolled her eyes, flipping to a new page in the thick textbook in her hands. As a child, she'd never had anything to do other than read. It had become a habit to read anything, even dry course books, whenever she had nothing else to do.
The upside was that she was always ahead in her studies. With her almost photographic memory and accelerated rate of learning, she never had to work hard to excel in school.
The downside was that she had no life.
"What the hell are you doing?" Cole snatched up Lana's book.
"Hey!" she complained, rolling over so she could glare at him. Her eyes itched, but she didn't dare rub at them. If she did, the contact would most likely fall out, and then what would become of her? "Give that back!"
"Elementals Practice Level 8?" Cole's jaw slackened in disbelief. "What the hell? This is college level material!"
"Yes, so there is no point for a dimwit such as yourself to hog my book! Give it back!" Lana snapped, reaching over and snatching it back. She slammed the book shut, settling it on her lap gently.
"Level 8?" Cole asked. "Are you kidding me? I'm in the advanced learning program myself, and I've only reached Level 5 so far."
"Your point?" Lana sniffed, glaring up at Cole.
