Chapter 22

"And where are you going at this hour?"

I turn around to face Peter with a frown on my face, "And why do you wanna know?" I question crossing my arms over my chest.

"Just curious." He says with his infamous smile.

I roll my eyes but answer, "If you must know, I'm meeting Scott."

"Oh." He says with a quirked brow. "A date."

"Yes, Peter. A date. So if that's all-"

"But where? Where are you going?" He pushes further.

I squint my eyes in his direction, feeling increasingly confused, "I don't know. It's supposed to be a surprise... Why do you-"

"Just worried for my niece's safety. Is that a crime?" I focus on his heartbeat and am shocked to hear it stay neutral.

"You are worried about me?"

"Why is that so hard to believe after everything I've done for you?" He questions giving me a knowing look.

My eyes fall down to my feet as it feels like a dark cloud has come over us, "You're right." I take a breath before meeting his eyes again, "Thank you again for doing all that."

"Just doing what any good uncle would."

"Did it- nothing went wrong right? With the... um, body and house and everything."

He pauses for a second, "Why would it?" He asks casually.

I shake my head as a chuckle escapes my lips, "I think I'm just getting a little paranoid."

"Don't be. Go out, live your life as if nothing happened. Forget about the whole thing."

"But how can I?"

"You did the right thing killing her, you know that right?" He says, taking a step toward me.

"I murdered someone."

"But as I said, she deserved it. Just like those people who murdered our family. Life isn't black and white-"

"It's grey, I know. It still feels wrong though."

"Think of it like this." He says taking a deep breath, "Think of how a wolf preys on animals in nature. Killing and ripping some poor innocent bunny to death. You wouldn't call them a murderer, would you? It's in their nature. They hunt for the pure intention of food, whereas we... we do it for... the good of mankind." A sly smirk makes its way onto his lips, "You could say we're heroes."

"I wouldn't go that far."

"You know that I'm right though."

"Yeah, I guess," I say with a small shrug.

"Good. Now go out there, and be back before 10." He says crossing his arms over his chest.

"Before 10?"

"Before 10."

"Got it." I breathe out, turning to walk out of the loft.

"And Nina." He calls as I step outside the doors.

"Yeah?" I ask turning to face him.

"Be safe." He says with all previous amusement gone.

"Okay... but there's no Deadpool anymore."

"It's Beacon Hills, anything can happen. Just be safe."

"I'll be on the lookout for any strange supernatural creatures lurking around," I say with an eye roll but can't help the warm feeling spreading in my chest. I hate to admit it but Peter's probably been the closest thing I've had to a parent in years. Even if he is a so-called psychopath, it means a lot to have someone look after me like he does.
