When Ella woke she lay completely still. She had been woken by the sound of something, a seemingly large something, splashing around in the pool. Ella moved slowly and carefully, as to not make any sound that could draw attention to herself, and peeked out behind the branches.
There in the shallows of pool was a rather large red fox. Her breath halted and eyes became huge. Rather large feels like a bit of an understatement, the thing was close to the size of a horse. It just stood still staring into the water. Ella gasped loudly as there was a red blur and it re-emerged from its speedy dive with a few fish struggling in its jaws. It bound over to the shore, a short distance away, and dropped them onto a large stone. The fox then killed them quickly so they wouldn't flop around.
She lay crouched and perfectly still as she watched the fox turn back to the pool. Her body became covered in goosebumps, and arm hairs stood on end as the fox stopped in its tracks. Lifting its nose and taking a few sniffs she heard a low growl start to come from deep within its chest. When it turned its head in her direction and lifted its lips into a snarl she had to fight back a scream, and pressed herself as far back into her opening as she could go. After a few moments she hear the sand and small stones moving outside of her makeshift den. When the branches were pulled back and she was looking into the deep amber eyes of the snarling beast frozen in terror she began to cry.
As she huddled there crying hysterically, the fox stopped snarling and slowly lowered its head, putting the branches onto the ground and looking at her curiously. When it bent its head toward her, nose brushing against her foot and leg, Ella finally screamed. With the loud shriek the fox quickly backed up with butt and tail low, and ears back in a spooked expression on its face. Ella at this point was so weak and stressed from the efforts of the last two days her vision went hazy. She heard a yelp from the fox and then lost consciousness.
