1994, EIGHT YEARS LATER...

Ashley had been teaching at Top Gun since she graduated and everyone split off. She moved from Miramar after she completed her training and moved to Nevada once the TOPGUN facility relocated, where she met her now husband, Trevor

"Mommy, I want to be a pilot just like you and daddy" Young Robert spoke

"You can be whatever you want to be" Ashley smiled, holding two year old Robert in her arms, as she walked him off to his nursery for the day while she was working at TOPGUN. It was the start of a new term, which meant new recruits were joining.

"Mommy will be back to collect you later this afternoon, okay?" Ashley spoke as they arrived at the nursery

"Okay. I love you mommy"

"I love you too"

Ashley headed off to the base and changed into her uniform before heading over to the briefing room, "Your instructor is one of our best pilots, graduate of 1986. Captain Ashley Thompson, callsign Thunder" Ashley stepped into the room

"Welcome to Top Gun. You are the top one percent of all naval aviators. The elite. The best of the best, but we will make you better. You'll fly at least two combat missions a day, attend classes and evaluations of your performance. Now, in each combat sequence will bring a different challenge. Every encounter will be much more difficult. We are going to teach you to fly the F-14 right to the edge of the envelope - faster than you've ever flown before, more dangerous. We don't make policy here, folks. Elected officials - civilians - do that. We are the instruments of that policy" Ashley spoke, reciting the same words Viper once spoke to her, "and although we are not at war, we must always act as if we are"

Ashley went about her day, flying and training her class of TOPGUN trainees until the end of the day.  She headed home to her husband and son cooking in the kitchen.

"Mommy!" Little Robert shouted as Ashley stepped through the front door

"Hey baby!" Ashley smiled, picking up Robert in her arms as he ran to her, "Something smells good" Ashley chuckled

"Country Fried Steak" Ashley's husband Trevor spoke, stepping over to give his wife of three years a kiss. The family sat down together and enjoyed their family meal before bedtime.

Ashley tucked Robert into bed as Trevor cleared the plates away from dinner as she read him a story.

"Mommy?"

"Yeah, baby?" Ashley asked, turning around

"When will we see uncle Maverick and Bradley?" Robert asked

"I'm not sure, sweetheart... He's been busy at the moment and Bradley has school, remember? I promise, you'll see them soon" Ashley spoke, "Now, go to sleep. I love you" She turned off his light and closed the door, leaving only a gap between the door frame.

Trevor had already headed to bed so Ashley was sat in the living room alone, as she looked at a picture of her, Trevor, Robert, Maverick, Bradley and Carole all together last year when they all met up. Ashley became good friends with Carole and she and Maverick made her a promise to protect Bradley at all costs as his aunt and uncle.

1997

Ashley paced the floor of the hospital waiting room as she waited to receive word on her husband's condition.

"Mrs Floyd?" A nurse spoke

"Yes, is my husband okay?"

"Perhaps, you should take a seat" The nurse spoke

Ashley hesitantly sat down as the nurse sat next to her, "what's going on?"

"I'm afraid Trevor suffered a cardiac arrest and because he was out for so long, his body was unable to receive the oxygen it needed. I'm very sorry Mrs Floyd"

"Are you telling me my husband's... dead?"

"I am very sorry, Mrs Floyd"

The nurse left Ashley to collect her thoughts. She stayed with Trevor until she had to go. She climbed the steps of her home as everything she remembered of Trevor came flooding back... Her wedding, bringing Robert home for the first time...

She picked up her phone and dialled a number, "Hello?" Carole's voice spoke

"Hey, it's Ash" She spoke

"Ashley! How is Trevor?" Carole asked

"He.. uh... He died this afternoon"

"Oh my god, sweetheart. I'm so sorry"

Ashley and Carole spoke for a while before Robert returned home from playgroup. She sat him down and explained that Trevor had passed away. Of course he was only three years old and he didn't quite understand his daddy would never be coming home again but she made sure to keep Trevor alive in her and Robert's memory as he grew up.

Being a widow and a single mother took some getting used to for Ashley but she had the help from Carole and Robert grew up to graduate high school with perfect grades and he successfully managed to get into the academy and trained to become a WSO.
