Ezra looked on as troopers pulled two people from their home, dragging them away as they kicked and screamed. You realized these were Ezra's parents, "why were you not taken with them, Ezra?"
He sniffled, "my folks hid me inside, they figured this day would come, so they had a plan in place for me to be hidden. A friend of theirs was supposed to come and find me, they told me not to move until he came to get me and keep me safe."
The scene shifted slightly and a small boy peeked out from inside the abandoned building. Ezra looked at the boy sadly, knowing it was his reflection, "I waited, but he never came."
Ezra shifted the image again, you now saw the small boy wandering the streets of Lothol by himself, waiting for someone to take pity on him and give him some food.
"I was too young to do anything, so I lived on scraps from others for a few years," he explained. You snuck a glance at Kanan, he was looking in awe as he relived the tragic past of young Ezra, you suspected that Ezra had never told Kanan about his past, especially not like this.
Ezra shifted the scene again, only this time you were at an abandoned communications tower outside the capital city. "I moved out here, started stealing to stay alive," Ezra explained, "I knew there was more I should be doing with my life, but it was all I could do to survive."
You placed a hand on his shoulder, "we all do things to survive that we are not proud of, the important thing is that you survived, Ezra. And you are stronger for it."
Ezra nodded, his force form sitting down cross-legged, but not fully emerging back into reality. You and Kanan sat next to him. "It feels different here," Ezra said, "Before, it was hard to even think about my parents, but being here now, feels easier, calmer."
You nodded, "you have come to terms with it, shared the burden, it doesn't hurt anymore."
Kanan spoke for the first time, "I feel different too, like I am seeing everything in a different light, from a new perspective."
You smiled at both of them, "and now you have both realized my lesson," you explained, "bonding not just in the present, but in the past and future, will strengthen your connection in the force." You continued, "you have both spent too much time trying to fit into roles that you are not. Kanan, you do not have to train Ezra as you were trained, because he was not raised like you. And Ezra, Kanan may be your master, but he does not have to be an authority figure that stomps on your freedom. You do not have to fit into traditional roles for you to learn and progress."
They nodded and you all closed your eyes, centering yourself again and returned to reality. When you opened your eyes again, you were all sitting cross legged in the hanger bay, a peaceful and calming aura wrapped around the three of you.
Ezra looked more relaxed than before. "Run through your forms again, I need to speak to Master (Y/N)," Kanan instructed. To his surprise Ezra nodded and went about it right away.
You chuckled as Kanan gawked at the new Ezra. "You changed him," he whispered.
You shook your head, "no, you have both changed."
