Kanan was standing in the middle of the Jedi temple, at least what it looked like before it was destroyed. He had aged quite a bit, his face had the light stubble of facial hair and his traditional ponytail was grown out longer. His body was more muscular, the toned edges of his civilian clothes gave it away. He looked angry, alone and most of all afraid.
What was most striking about the image in front of you was the blue hued images of the fallen masters, the same ones that appeared to you when you died. Kanan spoke softly, "I was in a dark place, I was contemplating revealing myself to the emperor, requesting to join in his new inquisitor program." You looked at Kanan in shock, but he refused to meet your eyes, "I felt anger all of the time, I was alone and scared and I had no idea what I was doing. I thought if I joined the enemy, at least I would have a family."
You said nothing, waiting for him to continue, "I had booked passage to Coruscant that night, I fell asleep and this was the dream I had. Master Billaba spoke to me," Kanan shifted his gaze to his memory, allowing it to finish his story-
Master Billaba looked at Kanan with pride in her eyes, "Caleb, you have been so strong," she said lightly, "do not turn to the darkness now."
"But Master, I don't know what to do anymore," Caleb said, his voice straining, "I just don't know what to do on my own."
Depa smiled at him, reaching her hand under his chin, forcing him to look in her eyes, "you have never been alone Caleb, we have always been by your side," she said, gesturing to the masters around her.
"I'm so sorry," Caleb whispered, a tear falling down his face, "I'm sorry I left you, I'm sorry I ran, and I'm sorry that even now I disappoint you."
She shook her head, "you have never disappointed me Caleb," she said with a smile, "not once."
Caleb met her eyes and smiled, a freeness setting in as the presence of his old master faded the darkness in his life. He took a deep breath, "what do I do now?"
It was Master Windu who now spoke, "go to Gorse, it is a mining system in the outer rim, there you will find a young Twilek pilot."
Depa continued, "this young pilot will lead you to a surviving jedi one day, who will reinforce your connection with the light and be your guide in this changing world."
Caleb nodded, "who is it?"
Depa smiled and shook her head, "you will have to learn that for yourself. Your world is about to change Caleb," she placed a hand on his heart, "hold on to what is in here and you will always know what to do."
The memory stopped and you and Kanan stood in silence, "I woke up and found Hera not long after," he said, "and she led me to you."
You shook your head, "if you were hoping for a leader Kanan, I am not the one you were supposed to find, that isn't me anymore."
Kanan nodded, "when she told me that, I never expected it would be you, I honestly thought you were somewhere still involved in the war, still on the front lines. But here you are, and I think Master Billaba always knew that." He continued, "she said you would be my guide in a new world, this world isn't black and white anymore, I'm not sure it ever was, but we are here now and we can still take on the empire without being on the front lines."
"Why are you showing me this?" you asked.
Kanan smiled, "because you are my connection to the light, and I am yours. We're in this together now."
You smiled letting his words sink in, "okay, then let's do this."
Kanan nodded, "okay."
