You curled your knees to your chest, letting tears roll down your cheeks. You heard the sound of your door sliding open, but didn't even look up.
Kanan, without a word, came to sit next to you, placing a hand on your shoulder. "Want to talk about it?" he asked.
You shook your head, letting your forehead fall to your knees. Kanan sat next to you in silence before you finally lifted your head, your face red and puffy, "I had to say goodbye," you whispered.
Kanan nodded in understanding. "She reached for me and I pulled back," you explained, your floodgates opening, "she tried to find me and I ran away, I abandoned her."
Kanan shook his head, "you left so she could have a better life, you protected her."
"Then why does it hurt?" you choked out, "why does it hurt so much?"
"Because you were selfless, you gave up your happiness for her to survive," he soothed, "and you did the same for Hunter."
"He's alone, Kanan," you whispered, "he didn't know I was there but I heard him, he said he couldn't do it without me."
Kanan remained silent, you sat up straighter, wiping the tears from your face although the redness didn't go away, "when did everyone younger become more wise than I?"
Kanan chuckled, "because you taught us in the first place, you just forgot where you came from, I can remind you."
You shook your head, "I don't want to remember the Jedi, that hurts just as much."
Kanan nodded, "you told Ezra that he had to accept his past and his pain in order to move forward."
You held up your hand to stop him, "yes, and apparently I am unable to take my own advice, thanks for pointing that out."
Kanan laughed, "I'm sorry, master, I know it is hard, but somehow, we just have to keep going."
You nodded, inhaling deeply, "yes, and that means I have to let Omega go, I have to let her live a normal life."
Kanan looked at you suspiciously, "and Hunter?"
You looked down at your feet, your heart aching at what you knew needed to be done, "Hunter too," you whispered softly.
Kanan placed a comforting hand on your shoulder before walking out of the room, leaving you to your thoughts. You knew all along that you had to forget about Hunter and Omega, that for them to survive, they needed to leave you, but saying it out loud just made it feel real.
You had been such a mess since the Battle for Polis Masa, your life just felt out of sync. You forgot your own teachings in the jumbled disaster of your thoughts, you were too wrapped up thinking about Hunter, thinking about a piece of your dream that you could no longer have. You would always love him, but sometimes when you love someone, you have to let them go.
You reached into your pocket and pulled out the photograph that you always kept there. You unfolded the worn paper and looked at the faded image of you and the batch. You fingers traced over each of their faces, but lingered over Hunter's. His smile was so bright as he stood next to you and his brothers.
A tear stung your eye as you pulled open a drawer by your bed and placed the image inside, "I'm sorry, Hunter, but you're better off without me." You hesitated for a moment, but finally let go of the paper and closed the drawer.
