I was fourteen when it happened.
When the truth came out and I was forced to run from my father.
I had been by his side for as long as I could remember, but when I discovered everything that he had been hiding from me–his plans for the Fold, for Ravka, for me–I couldn't sit by and help him with it.
Being what I was, I had grown up in the Little Palace to be trained by both him and my grandmother. I had never met my mother: according to my father, she had died not long after I was born, killed by Drüskelle on a mission in Tsibeya.
Sometimes I think I remember glimpses of her. Her voice, her touch. Her eyes.
My eyes.
It was the only thing I had gotten from her. My hair, my face, my powers: all from my father. Because of this, my father was the only true connection I had left to her.
But when I found out the truth thanks to my grandmother, I knew I couldn't stay in Ravka. I couldn't let him use me for his own gain, if not for everyone else then because my mother never would've wanted it.
And so I ran.
All the way to Ketterdam.
