[ Chapter Twenty-One: Not in the cards ]

AGE: 18

I WAS SWEATING, EYEING MY GRANDMOTHER as she paced back and forth in front of both Jeremiah and I. We were the only ones inside her office, with her and my guards looming outside with Charlotte so nobody would interrupt us. I leaned back in my chair, biting my lower lip hoping that she would speak anytime soon

"Okay, I've thought it over if I'm being honest and I still come to the same conclusion." Grandma spoke up, interrupting me out of my thoughts

"We are not getting married just because she's pregnant!" Jeremiah stated firmly from his seat across from me

"Well then the child will have no claim to the throne, even if you two do decide to get married after they are born." Grandma pointed out to him making my eyes widen at her words but Jeremiah was still in defense

"Why are you so insistent on her getting married?!" Jeremiah exclaimed to her, and she raised an eyebrow at his direction

"Because I want the child to inherit the throne because if we don't then Siegfried and Joy can somehow land their hands on it!" Grandma hissed out at him and me by default catching me by surprise

"Aha! I knew this was a power play!" Jeremiah pointed out to her, standing up from his chair so he could be eye-to-eye with her

"Of course it is, Jeremiah, everything is a power play here. You can't expect there to be no consequences for your actions, especially with impregnating my granddaughter, the Queen of Genovia." Grandma tried to explain to him and I absently nodded my head, realizing that I had not spoken a word

"Look grandma, I don't think it really matters if this baby would be able to claim the throne or not. It's a possibility that I would have future kids once I am married or that even Mia could end up married and have children later on in life." I tried to defend my boyfriend and myself to my grandmother

"It's a possibility, yes, but that is all it is! A possibility." Grandma stated with her arms crossed as she stared at the both of us before leaving the room

"I don't know what to do." I whispered as the door closed behind her and Jeremiah stood still from where he was

"Well, it's obvious what your grandmother wants, which is for us to get married so that the von Trokens don't get the throne after you." Jeremiah sighed, falling back into his chair while rubbing his forehead

"I know, I know, Jer. Maybe we should get married so the baby can get the throne after me?" I asked him before throwing my head back, staring up at the ceiling

"That's the thing, Mary. I don't want to get married for a political power move  but for when we want it. And please, do not doubt that I am in love with you because I am, you know I am. I want us to get married in our time, in our pace." Jeremiah explained to me and I went to sit up properly in my seat to give him a look

"What do you want me to say, Jeremiah? What do you want me to do?" I questioned my boyfriend with a raised eyebrow

"I don't know, and if I am being honest, I think I just need a while." Jeremiah answered me and I began to stand up from my chair

"That's all right, you can be here as long as you like." I tried to assure him as I started to walk towards the door and when I past him, he grabbed onto my wrist

"A break from us pretty girl." Jeremiah informed me and I widened my eyes at his words, looking down at him in shock
