[ Chapter Twenty: My Favorite Song ]

AGE: 18

I EYED AS THE DOCTOR CAREFULLY squirted some of the gel from the bottle onto my stomach. I bit my lower lip and glanced at the doorway, hoping for Jeremiah to come through them. I glanced back to the doctor and gave her a nervous smile, unsure what the next step was.

"Mary, are you ready?" The doctor asked me and I nodded my head, thankful that she had called me by my name and not my title

"I'm here, I'm here, don't worry." Jeremiah said as he came through the doors and closed it behind him

"You came." I told my boyfriend in a surprised tone since he stayed silent over the phone when I informed him about our baby

"I did, Michael snapped me out of it. Hello, I'm Jeremiah, Mary's boyfriend and I'm the Dad." Jeremiah introduced himself to the doctor with a small wave and she nodded her head back

"Nice to meet you, Dad. I'm Dr. Goldstein. We just got started, so you didn't miss anything yet." Dr. Goldstein reassured Jeremiah as he came closer to sit on the chair beside me

The three of us stayed silent, the only sound in the room echoing was white noise. I started to close my hands in fist, trying to ease my nerves but thankfully Jeremiah noticed and grabbed them, giving my hands a light squeeze. Soon enough, when she lowered the wand and the noise became clearer, and it started to beat repeatedly making me freeze.

"Is that the-" Before Jeremiah could finish his question, he froze as well, hearing our baby's heartbeat

"That's the heartbeat. Right there." Dr. Goldstein pointed at her screen, showing us where the baby was

"We're having a baby." I told my boyfriend in realization, all of us this becoming more real than I ever thought

"We're having a baby." Jeremiah repeated my words and I took a deep breath, the three of us staying silent once more to listen to the heartbeat

I felt a squeeze on my hands, and I squeezed Jeremiah's hands in response. I couldn't help but already be terrified and excited at the prospect of having a baby but I didn't bother to voice my thoughts yet. I wanted this to be a happy memory and I knew it would be, because the both of us were entranced by the beautiful song that was playing.
