"You alright there man?" A deep voice asked.
"Uh, who are you?" Zane asked, stunned. Nobody approached him. He was the typical bad boy, and everyone was too intimidated by him to confront him or even utter a word to him. They all knew who his old man was and they knew he was a good-for-nothing drunk, who couldn't hold down a job and abused his son. And the rumor is that Zane got so fed up that he killed his father.
But of course, that wasn't true. It was just gossip. The alcohol ended up catching up with his old man. It was liver failure.
"I'm Jacob Philip. I live next door. I just moved here and I couldn't help but notice you sitting on your porch for quite a bit of time." He explained further. "I hope we can be friends." The boy extended his palm, and Zane hesitantly shook it quickly taking his hand back.
He wasn't one for socializing or being friendly. This boy was like his opposite. He was bright, upbeat, social, and friendly.
"Yeah, me too." He replied.

That day Zane's father died. He couldn't stay inside very long, it was suffocating him. He decided he would scrub the place down, and throw all the trash out. He wouldn't keep a thing of his dad's he would throw it all away.
He collected all the empty bourbon bottles into a black trash sack and then grabbed all the clothes, shoes, magazines, newspapers, and other belongings of his fathers and threw it all into his dumpster.
He was finally rid of it all. Soon he'd leave this house behind and never look back.
..
Ever since that initial encounter with Jacob, he would see him a lot at school. It was around the time Zane had to go live with his mom, yes the one that abandon him. He figured out he had a half-brother named Jax Damien. He befriended him and they got along all right. Zane is only a year older. They were both teenagers and both went to high school.
They'd sit at the dining table with Jax's dad, who was just like Jax, but worse, Zane at first just thought they liked joking around roughly, but as he lived with him longer. He began noticing his darker side, the guy was a tyrant. He got off on bullying kids at school, and tiny injured animals as well.
One time on a hunting trip Zane went on with Jax, and Greg his stepdad, and they all brought their rifles slung over their shoulders.
They shot birds while they laughed at the poor creatures. One bird had an injured wing, it was unknown how it got injured, but it was broken, and the animal was incapable of flying away. Zane watched Jax aim the gun at the bird, and he shot at it. The bird's feathers were blue and beautiful. The thought of killing such a pretty thing sickened Zane.
It landed on the grass, squeaking helplessly. Jax ran towards the prey and put his rifle up so he could squash the birds under his boot. "So, pathetic." He sneered.
"That's enough." Zane shoved him hard to the ground. "Don't torture it."
"But it was just getting entertaining." Greg was next to Jax allowing his indecent behavior, and Zane swore he had a smirk on his face. He was cheering his son on. They ruined the perfect scenery.
The pine trees were a dark shade of green, and they danced with the breeze, the sun glistened down on them, while the azure sky looked mesmerizing, and the clouds formed creative shapes. But the two jerks shooting at defenseless birds ruined it all.
Disgusting.
After that hunting trip, Zane never looked at the two men the same. And he avoided Jax as much as possible. which was hard considering he lived with him.
