"Of course that jerk ended up being the boss of the Port Mafia," you sighed, resting your head down on your desk at the agency. Your head throbbed as questions spun around in your mind.
Apparently, the guy who had looked like a doctor back in Anne's chamber wasn't only a doctor but also the boss of the infamous underground crime organization. He was a cold and dangerous man. Of course, this leaves you wondering where you recognized him from. It couldn't have just been simply from passing him on the street. He was important. You knew him from somewhere, but your mind just refused to tell you.
Deciding to get some much-needed rest since no one else seemed to be at the agency at the moment (Junichiro and Kunikida were downstairs in the cafe, Ranpo was off with Yosano at a new candy store that just opened up nearby, Atsushi was getting a new case from the President, and Dazai was who-knows-where), you closed your eyes. You felt your consciousness slipping until a soft voice spoke, startling you out of your slumber. "Why haven't you been talking to Atsushi these past few days?"
"Huh!?" You jumped up, coming eye-to-eye with Kyouka, who stared at you with curiosity. Right, you almost forgot about her... "I-uh... what do you mean by that?"
She shrugged before sitting across from you in Atsushi's seat and explaining, "he was telling me that he was worried about you earlier today. He thought he did something wrong to upset you. Ever since the battle with that person from the Guild, you seem to have been ignoring him. At least, those are his words."
"I have been meaning to talk to him," you answered truthfully, "I just don't know how." Especially when he was so close to just leaving you behind during the battle...
The room fell silent for a second, so you quickly asked, "so... do you like any animals besides bunnies and rabbits?"
Hesitantly, she replied, "I don't like dogs, but cats are nice."
"Maybe we could go to a petting zoo together once all of this is over? We could invite Kenji too."
"I don't know what a petting zoo is like..."
You smiled pitifully in her direction. She didn't have a real childhood, just like almost everyone else in the agency...
"I'd be delighted to show you what they're like. Young kids your age love it there. Have you ever wanted to get a pet? If so, one time we could go buy one for the office." There was still some time left to give this child a proper childhood. Even if it was too late for everyone else, it wasn't too late for her.
Her lips curved the slightest bit into a smile before nodding lightly. Maybe she could get along with someone other than Atsushi...
Just then, Atsushi walked in carrying a large envelope and a stun gun, shouting out her name. "Kyouka! The President gave you your first job!" His eyes then laid upon you and Kyouka and hesitated a second before asking, "(Y/N), would you... like to come along as well?" He gave you a questioning glance.
