"Yeah," Lisa said into the phone. "I know. I just heard... she's here... ok, just have them reissue a new card... yeah. Ok. Thanks, man."
Lisa clicked the phone back off and looked up at Jennie. "Jackson's taking care of it." she told Jennie.
Jennie didn't reply. Her eyes were fixed on the phone in Lisa's hand.
"It's the bat phone." Lisa said, holding it out towards her. Jennie still said nothing, standing motionless and glaring at the phone.
"What?" Lisa asked.
Finally she looked up, directing her glare at Lisa's face. "So that was on the whole time?"
"I told you." Lisa said. "Bat phone never gets turned off."
Jennie opened her mouth but closed it again without speaking, wordlessly pulling open the office door and stepping out into the hallway. Lisa caught her arm as Jennie stepped past her.
"Jennie!" she said. "Come on! Don't be upset."
Jennie spun back around to face her. "I'm out!" she said. "I hope you and Jackson will be very happy together."
"Don't be like that..." Lisa replied, pulling her back into the room. Lisa knew what this was, of course. She had seen this script before, and it didn't have anything to do with the credit card. Every woman she'd ever dated - they always came up with the same request, sooner or later.
"Jennie..." she said. "Do you want to be in the bat phone? Is that what this is?"
Jennie shook her head. "I don't care about your stupid bat phone, Lisa."
"Give me your phone."
Lisa held out her hand towards Jennie, wiggling her fingers. Jennie watched her for a moment, trying to decide whether to remain angry or give in to Lisa's attempt to make up with her. "Fine." Jennie breathed at last, pulling her phone out of her purse and handing it to Lisa.
Lisa flicked through her contact list and began tapping in a number under her name.
"You know I've never given this number to a girl before." Lisa said as she tapped. "Never." She glanced up at Jennie seriously as she continued. "And you understand this is strictly for emergencies."
"I think this morning qualified as an emergency." Jennie replied, holding out her hand to take the phone back.
"Wait..." Lisa said, positioning the phone screen so Jennie couldn't see it as she continued tapping.
"What are you doing?"
"Ringtone." Lisa replied. "It's downloading."
"Is that really necessary, Lisa?" Jennie reached out again to take the phone from her, but Lisa held it up over her head, out of her reach.
"There..." Lisa said, breaking into a grin as the download finished and she hit the screen with her thumb to make it play.
Jennie tried her best to maintain her icy stare, but she couldn't help laughing when she recognised the tune Lisa had chosen - the opening bars from Roy Orbison's Pretty Woman.
"Are you done now?" Jennie asked, reaching out for the phone one more time.
Lisa shook her head, still smiling mischievously, and she held the phone in both hands as Jennie watched Lisa sink down to one knee.
"Jennie." she said. "You're the one. I love you. Will you please accept this ring?"
"Give me that!" Jennie snatched the phone out of Lisa's hands, but she could still see the laughter in Jennie's eyes as she rose back to her feet. "You're such a child." Jennie said.
Lisa put her arms around Jennie again, and she allowed Lisa to draw her back to her, looking up into Lisa's face.
"I love you." Lisa whispered.
She smiled and ducked her head for a moment before looking up to meet Lisa's eyes again. Lisa felt her stomach do a somersault as she watched Jennie's lips form the words she'd been waiting to hear from her all week.
"I love you too, Lisa." Jennie softly whispered back.
