"Come on! I'm ready!" I yelled to my mother and sister after getting ready faster than I ever had before. "Let's go" my mother said, walking down the stairs with my sister, and opened the door. "You're excited" she muttered as I sprinted out of the door. "Obviously mum! What if out house burns down? We need people!" I replied, laughing. I walked across the street and stood outside Ashton's door, waiting for my mum and sister to cross the street and ring the bell.
The door opened and the blonde lady I saw before stood there and said, "Hi!" before quickly hugging my mum, sister and then me and let us inside. "Lauren! Harry!" my sister squealed when we walked in and saw them sitting on the couch. My mother looked at me and raised her eyebrows. "Oh we met them at the park in the evening" I said to her and sat down on the couch, while my mother walked to the kitchen to talk to Anna-Marie. "Um, Lauren. Where's Ashton?" I asked, looking around their house. "In his room, probably. Wait for my mum to say the word 'dinner' and watch how he runs out of his room" she said, laughing.
And sure enough, a few minutes later when Anna-Marie told us all to sit at their table for dinner, Ashton walked down the stairs. He was no longer in the old t-shirt and shorts he was wearing in the park. "Someone's showered" I muttered as he sat down next to me. Ashton looked at me and smiled the smile with the never ending dimples and said, "Hi to you, too", making me smile. Dinner was mostly small talk, and lots of Ashton and me making remarks loud enough for just the two of us to hear.
"Lauren, Harry, Ashton, why don't you show Y/N and Emilia around while I get dessert ready?" Anna-Marie said. They nodded and Lauren and Harry dragged my sister off to their backyard and Ashton said, "I'll show you the upstairs first" "You aren't even really going to show me around" I said, when we were halfway up the stairs. "Of course I am" Ashton said, pulling a door open and said, "This is my room. The tour is done" I laughed and followed him inside.
There were a few posters up on the walls and there were more rolled up in a corner of his room. His bed was pushed against a wall and opposite it was his drum set. "Hey did you know that if you look from this window you can see this other person's room?" he asked me, opening his curtains. I laughed softly and asked, "And who told you that?" walking to him. "Just someone I met at the park" he replied, looking down at me. He opened the window and sat down on the ledge in front of it and patted the spot next to him, "Sit" I nodded and sat down next to him, the slight breeze was pushing Ashton's curly hair into his face but he didn't seem to mind.
We sat in silence for a few minutes, both of us just staring out of his window. Ashton broke the silence, "It's a Friday night. Why aren't you out with your college friends?" I shrugged and said, "I don't really have crazy, party animals for friends. Most of my friends are like me. They spend weekends babysitting their siblings and studying" "Studying? But aren't these supposed to be holidays?" "We like to be ahead" I replied, feeling stupid again for being so boring, and hid my face in my palms. "What?" he asked, laughing softly, his hands reaching for mine and pulling them off my face. I looked up at him and said, "I feel so boring" and laughing, feeling embarrassed. "You're not boring. You just like things that other people would rather not like" he replied. "Are you 90 years old, Ashton?" I asked. "Hey, I'm only 89!" he said, laughing. This was maybe the 7th different kind of laugh I had heard from him since I met him.
The door to his room opened and Lauren stood there. "Am I interrupting something?" She asked, looking at our hands. Ashton bit his lip and I moved my hands out of his. "What is it, Lauren?" he asked. "Dessert" she replied and smiled at me, shutting the door. "I'll get it. You sit here and try to figure out how you can sneak out of your window and climb into mine" he said, smiling at me. "Go" I said, pushing his arm, laughing.
Sneak out? Why had I never done that? It was so easy. There was a tree right outside my window and it had never occurred to me. Then I noticed the tree next to Ashton's window. I stood up and walked to the wall with Ashton's posters, trying to figure out why he'd moved and how he'd known about it a year before and I was so tempted to bring it up with him but I'd never talk to someone again if they got too nosy about what happened to me and why I was the way I was.
"Um, Y/N? Door!" I heard Ashton yell from outside his door. I opened it and saw him standing with two glasses in his hands. "Chocolate mousse" he said, smiling and handing me a glass. "Not vanilla for you?" I asked, smiling. He shook his head and said, "I had the most amazing chocolate ice cream this evening and who wants vanilla after that?" I sat down on the ledge again and Ashton sat next to me, a little closer than we were before. "So did you figure it out yet?" he asked me, looking at me. "I'm not an idiot, Ashton" I replied, eating the strawberry covered in chocolate first. "You like strawberries?" Ashton asked me. I nodded. "Have mine. Please" he said, and gave me his. "Thanks. Now, I know how I'll get here but how will you sneak into mine?" I asked. "I climb down this tree and up that" he replied, looking confused. "But I thought you're 89 years old" I said, laughing.
"Don't mock the elderly" Ashton said, pretending to be angry. "I'm sorry" I said, trying to sound apologetic but I was just laughing. "I liked today" Ashton said, a few minutes later, when we were both done eating. "I liked today, too" I replied, smiling at him. "Okay. Would it be really stupid if I asked you to stay the night?" Ashton asked. "My mum would never let me, Ashton" "I know but I just like talking to you. A lot. And I don't want today to end" "Is this why you were asking me if I would sneak into your room?" I asked. He nodded, smiling. "My mother falls asleep in 15 minutes so give me 20 minutes and I'll be over" I said, suddenly feeling excited. "I'd like that" Ashton said, softly, looking straight into my eyes. "Is 'stay the night' some kind of slang in Australia for something um weird?" I asked, realising that I'd never even made bloody eye contact with a boy before. "It might be. But I just want to sit here and talk to you until the sun comes out. And maybe even after that" Ashton said, and pushed some hair behind his ear, drawing my attention to his insanely long fingers.
"Y/N?" I heard my mum yell. "Time to go" I said softly and stood up, picking up my empty cup of chocolate mousse. "I'll get that" Ashton said, standing up and taking the cup from my hand and setting it down. "See you in 20 minutes?" he asked, standing so close to me I could hear him breathing. "See you in 20 minutes" I said softly and stood on my toes to kiss his cheek. "Is this so I won't tickle your cheek?" he asked, smiling. "Damn it. You remember" I said, looking down at my feet. "Too bad" he said and leaned down to kiss my cheek, tickling me again. "Not too bad" I said, smiling and walked out of his room and to my mum and sister.
