"Y/n, your Hogwarts letter came in along with another letter from the Hemmings residence." Your mother calls from the kitchen window. You roll your eyes and grab the letters from her hand. It's the billionth letter he's sent you, it seems. Your mother gives you a knowing look and sighs, "You can't ignore him forever."
"Of course I can." You counter with a shrug.
"He is obviously trying to make up for...whatever he did. Ithink your should at least read them." She commented.
"Why?" Your father grunts from his spot at the table. "Just let her be."
"Thank you, father." You grin, to which he gives you a curt nod.
"This poor boy is trying so hard." Your mother sighs. You roll your eyes at her and sit next to your father.
"I like that you're finally giving Lucius' boy a chance. He's a good lad, inn' he?" Your father remarks, changing the subject.
"Depends on your definition of good." You mutter under your breath.
"What's that?" Your father asked, unable to hear you.
"Oh, em...I said yes, very good lad indeed." You lie. You admit, you've been spending a lot of time with Draco this summer, but it was only for reference, all he ever did was complain about Potter. This new you had to be convincing, you were going to own everyone's fear of you and use it to your advantage. It was time for a change, you liked that you were a good Slytherin, but that obviously wasn't enough. Before, it felt like your father's reputation was stapled to your forehead and you were ashamed and so eager to show people that you weren't so bad, but now you wear it proudly, you will be the evil they expect you to be.
"Maybe you should marry him someday." Your father jokes.
"Ew, dad. 'm only twelve!" You exclaim. He laughs and fixes his tie in the mirror.
"You ready to go to get your supplies?" He asks. This year you asked your father to take you to get supplies and you were even so bold as to ask him to take you to the train station. To be completely honest, you were nervous, not many people will take his presence well and luckily, he is immune to it, he drowns it out.
"Yes sir." You reply.
"We've got to make a quick stop in Knockturn Alley before we go to Diagon, that alright, lovey?" He inquired.
"Of course." You answer.
"Brilliant. Put your robe on, dear, we should be off by now," he claps once before heading to the massive fire place. You pull your robe around you and smirk at the green and silver emblem patched resting on your chest. "Here's some money to buy your supplies in case I don't find you in time."
You grab your small bag, putting your supply list and money in, your mother put an undetectable extension charm on it earlier that morning so you wouldn't struggle with carrying your new supplies. You step into the massive fireplace and grab a handful of floo powder, "Knockturn Alley." You say firmly before throwing the powder down, next thing you were in a shop called Burgins & Burke, it was dark and dusty. You walk over to look at some antiques in the shop when you heard someone crashing in from the fire place. Potter. You decided to hide, making sure he didn't see you. He was lost, probably said the wrong words while using floo powder. He was looking around at all the questionable items the store had to offer, when he began observing The Hand of Glory, you put your hand to your mouth as you anticipated what was about to happen, Potter put his hand on it out of curiosity, but before he had time to register what happened, The Hand of Glory clamped down, trapping him. Your hand stifled the laughs escaping your mouth as he struggled to get out of its grip. Your laughing ceased immediately when you spotted a very blonde boy peering in through the window, you looked back at Potter to see that he noticed Draco as well. Potter finally got his hand out and rushed towards an empty mummy casket and stepping in all before Draco walked in. Draco saw an item he liked and put his hand on it, smiling at it slightly, until his father slapped the object with his cane, causing the both of you to jump.
"Don't touch anything, Draco." Mr. Malfoy spits. Draco's whole demeanor changes as he puts his hand to his side.
"Yes, father." He says. They proceed to the back of the shop where the man who owns the place comes out and greets them. Mr. Malfoy is selling a box full of different things, talking about how the ministry is conducting raids on private houses for means of a new Muggle Protection Act. You were distracted though as you saw Draco wander towards the object Potter was hiding in, your eyes go wide as you see Draco go to open it, but before he could, Mr. Malfoy loudly closed it with his cane, once again causing the both of you to jump.
"What did I say?" His father's tone was low and angry.
"Touch nothing." Draco answered.
"Exactly."
"Sorry father." He says quietly. His father gives him a disapproving look.
"Come, Draco." Mr. Malfoy orders as they walk out. Not long after Potter walks out, you following behind him. You watch as a woman approaches him and then a man, backing him into a wall, followed by more people, you can tell Potters' frightened. You gnaw on your bottom lip, wanting to help Potter out, but knowing if you did all your hard work over the summer will have gone to waste. You watch as they were closing in on him and you listen to him panic until you can't take it anymore, you start to move towards him and even open your mouth to say something, but Hagrid's voice boomed over everyone. You realize what you were about to do, you shake your head and walk into the store you saw Draco walk into.
"Hello, darling." He smirked. His father wasn't with him, probably on some other business like your father.
"Draco." You mutter, unamused.
"I was just about to head to Diagon, you coming with?" He offers.
"Sure, I can't find my father anyways." You shrug, following him down the dark alley.
"I'm off to Flourish and Blotts, father told me to get my books first." Draco says as you enter the loud and crowded alley.
"I need to go to Madam Malkin's, I need a new skirt. I'll see you on the train." You say.
"Brilliant, see you then." He smiles. You push past many of the people that crowded the walkway before finally walking into Madam Malkin's. You head to the Hogwarts section and sift through the skirts. You hold two of the same skirt up and observe them.
"They both look the same if you ask me." You tense up when you hear the familiar voice from behind you.
You quickly put one of the skirts back and regain your composure before answering, "well, I didn't ask you, did I?"
"No, I suppose not." Luke chuckles. You quickly pay for the skirt and put it neatly in your bag before you walk out, heading to Amanuensis Quills.
"Why do you even need a new skirt? What's wrong with the one you're wearing?" He asked, following you out.
"I needed a shorter one" You reply.
"A shorter one?" He echoed. "What for?"
You stop abruptly, causing Luke to run into you before turning to look at him. "What's it to you?"
"Nothing, I guess." Luke shrugs.
"Then don't ask." You sneered, walking into Amanuensis. You grab four quills and four inks, ignoring Luke following behind you. You pay for your items and turn to find Luke standing in your way.
"What's with you?" Luke demanded.
"I don't know what you're talking about." You reply innocently.
"Cut the bullshit, Y/n. Why are you angry with me? I sent you about fifty letters and you didn't answer one of them, did you even read them?" He fumes.
"No, I didn't." You reply honestly.
"What did I do? Tell me how to fix it." He pleads. "I don't want to lose you as a friend."
"Don't you see? We're not meant to be friends. It would be a lot easier if we just didn't talk at all." You responded, leaving Luke there to think about what you said. You walked out and put your quills and ink in your bag before pulling your list out, only to have it ripped out of your hands. You look up to see the culprit, Jack Hemmings. "Hey, give that back!"
"What were you doing in there with my brother?" He questions immediately.
"Nothing, I was buying my quills and he followed me." You shrug, successfully grabbing your paper from his hands.
"Just stay away from him, Y/l/n." Jack growls.
"Is there a problem here?" You hear your father's voice ask in a soft, but threatening tone from behind you. You smirk as you hear Jack audibly gulp and straighten his posture.
"N-No, sir." He stutters before running off like the coward he is.
"Odd lad. Friend of yours?" He asks.
"Not hardly." You reply.
"Okay..." He says slowly, "Did you get everything you needed, lovey?"
"Almost, I just need my books and I'll be all set." You answer. He nods and walks you to Flourish and Blotts. You could feel people staring and you could hear their harsh whispers, but you kept your head held high and your eyes full of pride. Once you purchased your books, you stacked them into your bag.
"Well, let's head to the train station, your mother is waiting for us." He commanded. You joined your mother at the train station where she had your luggage waiting with your cat, Smudgesnout, in his cage. Once inside, you find your way to Platform 9, and for the first time, all three of you run through the wall together, coming out on the other end on Platform 9 ¾ right besides the Hogwarts Express.
"Have a good year." Your mother says, hugging you tightly.
"We'll miss you, dear." Your father adds, kissing you on your forehead. You grab your luggage and Smudgsnout. You look to your side and see the Hemmings' boarding the Gryffindor car, you meet Luke's eyes and you two stay like that for a very short lived while.
"Y/n, there you are! " Draco's words bringing your attention away from Luke. "You ready?"
"Yeah." You reply, following him into the Slytherin car, not daring to look back at Luke. When you finally get to Hogwarts, the sorting hat ceremony goes rather quickly and the feast goes even faster, but then all the students got word about Harry and Ron driving all the way to Hogwarts in a flying car. You could almost hear Luke complaining about it, which caused your heart clench as you keep reminding yourself about what Jack said. The next day, your first class was Herbology with Professor Sprout, You were stood across from Draco and next to Luke, his doing, not yours. You were dealing with mandrates today and Hermione already got points for Gryffindor, Luke nudged you and in response you ignored him following Professor Sprout's instructions. Luke left you alone in the rest of your classes, which was disappointing, but you told yourself that it was good for you. The next morning you got dressed in your uniform, you left the top three buttons undone, your skirt was definitely shorter than last year and your black knee-highs sitting unevenly on your legs. During breakfast, you were sat by Draco, listening to him talk about being the new Seeker when you hear Finnegan shout from the Gryffindor table that Weasley's got a Howler, the next thing you know, Weasley's mother's voice boomed loudly about the car incident, Ron's face was probably the funniest thing you've seen in a long time. Next you had Defense Against the Dark Arts with Professor Lockheart, the stupid man let out more than a dozen Cornish Pixies out in the class, everyone fled from the classroom. You arrived early for midnight Astronomy class, you began your assignment and were nearly finished when a girl, Daphne, from your house comes up to you.
"Hello." Daphne says, her voice too high for your liking. She was much too scared to ever engage in conversation with you last year.
"What do you want?" You demand, keeping your eyes on your work.
"I-I..you're Y/n Y/l/n-"
"Are you just going to state the obvious or is there an actual reason you're talking to me?" You spit, irritated, writing more on your work.
"I..I was wondering if I c-could sit here. I'm Daphne by the way. Daphne Greengrass." She says, waiting for you to reply. You have to fight the urge to roll your eyes and look up at her standing figure, you could tell that she was still afraid of you and that's a good thing.
"I know who you are." You sigh, annoyed, your eyes squinting a bit. You look back down at your work before answering her. "Sit, but keep your mouth shut."
She quickly sat down, getting her things out lazily and began doing her work. You could feel students looking over at you, obviously intrigued by the conversation. You look up at the people staring and they quickly turn away. You could still feel someone's gaze still on you so you whip your head around, only to be met with the piercing blue eyes of Luke Hemmings. You keep the angry expression on your face as he sends you a small smile.
"What are you looking at, you bloody berk?" You spat. A few students gasp at your words and Luke's smile immediately falls.
"N-Nothing." He stutters before looking down at his work. You roll your eyes and turn back to face the front. You finish the last touches on your work and gather your things before turning the paper in to Professor Sinistra and leaving the classroom. You couldn't believe you just called him that, you knew it hurt him and you were debating on going back to apologize, but he was probably finished with his work and out of the classroom by now.
"Blood...I smell blood." You stop dead in your tracks when you heard a voice, the voice sent chills down your spine, it wasn't a normal voice, but you looked around anyways. "Let me rip you... let me kill you..."
You walk slowly at first, leaning closer to the wall, where the voice is louder. Your heart beats fast and hard against your chest as you follow the voice at a quicker pace, you keep walking until you run into something, or someone, rather. You gasp, stumbling back a bit.
"Watch where you're going." Luke mutters coldly at you, before he sees your frantic expression, his cold demeanor softens as he asks, "Are you okay?"
"Did you hear that?" You inquire quickly.
"Hear what?" Luke's confusion was ever growing.
"The voice, that voice." You answer as the voice begins again.
"Kill... Time to kill..."
"I-I think it's going to kill." You worried as you run where the voice leads you.
"You think what's going to kill?" Luke fretted as he followed close behind you. It leads you to where a lot of students are gathered. You push past them to see what the big deal is, Luke standing next to you. You see Ron, Harry, and Hermione, both you and Luke were panting as you read the words on the wall:
"THE CHAMBER OF SECRETS HAS BEEN OPENED
ENEMIES OF THE HEIR... BEWARE"
Your breath gets caught in your throat when you see Mr. Filch's cat hanging beneath it, frozen. Then you see Mr. Filch making his way through the crowd. You couldn't stay there any longer, so you pushed your way out of the crowd and into an empty corridor, your thoughts running a million miles a second.
"Mind telling me what the bloody hell just happened?" Luke whisper-yells.
"I-I don't know, I just h-heard a voice, saying it was time to kill...I don't know how or why, but it had lead me to where everyone was back there." You try to explain. Luke doesn't say anything, but he walks you to your common room door and tells you to get some sleep.
It was the night after the Slytherin versus Gryffindor quidditch match when you hear the voice again, trying your best to ignore it, only to find out that a first year Gryffindor has been petrified. The next day, students are called into a special, mandatory class to train in defending yourselves with Professors Snape and Lockheart. You zone out and the next thing you knew Draco and Potter were up on the platform, throwing spells at each other, when Draco calls out, "Serpensortia!" and a long, black snake slithers from his wand towards Harry, you smirk as you recall having taught him that spell. Lockheart tries to rid of it, but is unsuccessful, only making the snake angrier. Then Harry starts talking to the snake, causing everyone to stare at him. The snake responding by turning to a small Hufflepuff named Justin.
"Leave him!." Harry kept saying over and over, but the snake keeps moving towards Justin, though it obeyed Harry's orders and wasn't going to harm the frightened Hufflepuff. Snape quickly puts a spell that made the snake vanish.
"What are you playing at?" Justin asked terrified as he backs away from Potter. Your eyebrows furrow in confusion as you try to make sense to what's happening. You don't stay to find out what happens next, you just grab a shocked Luke's arm and drag him out of the room.
"What just happened?" You ask.
"What do you mean? Potter just spoke in Parseltongue and told the snake to attack Justin!" Luke almost yells.
"What are you on about? Potter told the snake to leave Justin alone." You puzzled.
"You understood him?" Luke gasps, "Do you...Are you a Parselmouth?"
"What? No, of course not." You defend.
"Potter wasn't speaking English, Y/n." He says slowly.
"Yes he was! You heard him!" You cry out. Your breathing is labored as you brace yourself against the wall and close your eyes. "What's happening to me?"
"Just relax." He tries to calm you down.
"I need to speak with my father." You say as you quickly head back to the Slytherin common room. You quickly write out a letter asking your father why this was happening to you, asking if there was something wrong with you. You head to the owl tower and send it out before getting caught. At breakfast the next morning, you got a letter back. When you read it, your father explained that it wasn't uncommon in your family, his grandmother was a Parselmouth, and to not think on it too much. Your nerves were soothed and you went on about your daily routine, it wasn't until later that evening when Luke came up to you in an empty corridor.
"We need to talk, Y/n." He says, seriously.
"Oh, I figured it out, my great grandmother was a Parselmout as well. It's not uncommon in my family." You explain.
"That's great, but that's not what I wanted to talk to you about."He rubs the back of his neck, nervously. Your eyebrows crease and Luke sighs. "Look, it's about what you called me the other day in Astronomy. It really hurt, I thought you were better than that."
"Well you thought wrong. You really should stop being so sensitive." You shrug.
He scoffs and shakes his head. "What happened to you?"
"I realized that people will never stop seeing me as my father's reputation, so why try and hide it." You respond, cocking your head to the side as you wait for his reply.
"My brother was right about you. Wasn't he?" He asked, his tone sad.
You shrug, "believe what you want, Hemmings, I don't ca-"
You stop abruptly when you look to the window and see a line of spiders crawling along it. You're eyebrows furrow as you walk over to them.
"Now what are you doing?" Luke asks. You ignore him and follow the spiders, running until you hear familiar voices.
"Professor, I swear I didn't-"
"This is out of my hands, Potter." McGonagall interrupts. "Mr. Filch, will you take care of this, please?"
Mr. Filch nods and leaves, while McGonagall escorts Harry elsewhere. Once it's safe, you walk out and gasp, wide-eyed as you stare at Justin's petrified figure frozen on the ground. Luke had the same reaction as you, but he put his hands on your shoulders and guides you to hide behind the wall when Filch's footsteps became louder. Luke kept his hands on your shoulders as the both of you watched Madame Pomfrey and Filch haul Justin away on a stretcher.
"Y/n, there you are, 've been looking all over for you." Draco's voice pulling your attention away from the what you had just witnessed. Draco eyes Luke up and down before looking back at you, "What are you doing?"
"Justin's been petrified, we were just watching." You explain.
"Was Potter there again?" He spits.
"Yeah, but I don't think he's done it." You say.
"How do you know?" He inquires.
"Just do." You shrug. You walk past Luke and grab Draco's arm. "Come on then, I don't want to be caught in the corridor at night with you lot."
You wrote to your father the next day, asking him why there were spiders, why there were voice. He gave you a reply the next morning, telling you to read the letter in your dormitory and then burn it in the fire afterwards. He explained everything about the Chamber of Secrets, who had opened it, and that the last time it was opened, a mudblood died. You were still a bit confused, but didn't push it any further. You quickly set the paper ablaze and watched all of it reduce to ashes. The next day, around lunch, you all received notice that Granger had been petrified and it was a shock to everyone. A few days later McGonagall sent another announcement ordering all students to return to their dormitories at once and for all teachers to meet to the second floor corridor. Against your better judgment, you went to where the professors were meeting. You only caught a glimpse of what was happening, all you heard was a student had been taken by the monster and that the student was Ginny Weasley. You decide to leave it to the professors. You find out the next day as there was a feast, that Harry saved the day again, the Slytherin house didn't give much enthusiasm. The only good thing that came from the feast was that all final exams were cancelled and all the petrified were brought back. As you walked to the train, you see Luke staring at you, a suspicious vibe radiating off of him. Before you could register what was happening, he ran towards you and grabs Smudgesnout and runs into the train car.
"Wha...Get back here!" You scream, fuming with anger.
"You want your cat back, you've got to come take him from me." He smiles playfully before turning to run inside the car. You huff, knowing you couldn't leave your luggage, so you grab everything and follow Luke down the narrow hall of the train car. Finally, you track him down to an empty compartment, where his luggage was already on the rack. He was sitting, petting your cat as it purred. The train began to move as soon as you got to Luke.
"Give me my cat. Now." You demand.
"Just sit down, Y/n. Neither you, nor your father's reputation scare me." He says, handing you your cat and taking your luggage and putting it on the other rack. You let out a deep sigh in irritation, but sit anyways.
"What is it you want?" You question.
"I wanted to talk. This is getting out of hand. You were my best friend and something happened and suddenly you want nothing to do with me, and I will not stand for it anymore. This summer is not going to be like the last. I will write you and you will write back, I don't care if you've been sitting on your arse doing nothing or out in Romania watching dragons again."
"But your brother-"
"I don't give a damn about what my brother thinks! What he says or does, in no way effects me or how I feel about you." He responds honestly.
"You don't want to be seen with me, Luke." You try to reason.
He sighs gently and puts a hand on your shoulder, "believe me, I really do."
You gave him a small smile, but you let it fall. "I'm still a Slytherin and Draco is a good friend now, I can't just drop him."
"Then don't. You're allowed to have more than one friend, just don't treat them like shit." He says. You nod in agreement. The rest of the ride goes smoothly, and you know that this summer was going to be great.
