It was a terrible summer for you, it started off just like any other. Your mother was off before you woke, she works as a Healer at St. Mungo's Hospital, she came home very tired in the evenings, her lime green robes were wrinkled as she slumped down to rest. Your family had more than enough old money to last your family through many generations, but your mother insisted on working, she loved helping people, which is probably why she became a healer.
You were off spending time with Draco and his goons, one of those goons being Blaise Zabini. Blaise had been trying to get you to go out with him all summer, but you politely declined as you had a different boy in mind, a boy who hadn't replied to a single letter you've sent him all summer. It wasn't until one morning when your life turned a complete one-eighty and you needed your friend more than ever. You had woken up earlier than usual, you went to see your mother off before work, but saw your father instead. He was in a heated discussion with some strange man, this wasn't new to you, your father always had people over, stiff, mean looking people. Normally you would just shrug and head back to your room for more sleep, but as your father pulled his left arm sleeve up, a black marking on the inside of his lower arm caught your eye, it seemed to be a tattoo, you stay hidden as you look through the crack of the door. Your eyes widen immediately and your hand flies to your mouth to stifle a gasp as you see the skull with the snake around it. It was his mark, your father had the Dark Mark on his arm, which meant he was a Death Eater, which also meant every terrible story you've heard about him was true. You were so distressed you wrote everything you saw, everything you felt down on a piece of paper and stuck it in an envelope. You meant to burn it to ashes, you didn't expect your mother to fill out the Hemmings' information and send it out, just like you asked her to do with every other letter you sent to him. One half of you was hoping he ignored it like the rest of your letters, while the other half was hoping he would read it and talk to you, because you really needed him then. You decided not to confront your father, you were a little too frightened to even be in the same room as him. So you distracted yourself, trying to stay out of the house and avoiding your father so you hung out with Malfoy and his friends who soon became your friends and that get through the rest of your summer.
"So have you gotten all your books yet?" Blaise asked, joining your side as you walked with Daphne Greengrass down Diagon Alley.
"I'll catch you later, Pansy is probably looking for me." Daphne says, shooting you a knowing look before walking off.
"I just need the Intermediate Transfiguration book and I should be good to go." You say as you look down at your scratched off list.
"I'll go with you." Blaise smiled. "And maybe after..if you want, of course, we could get some ice cream."
"Brilliant."You say, mirroring his smile.
"Briliant." He echoed, breathing out a nervous laugh. You walked to Flourish and Blotts, getting your book and Blaise had smoothly caught your hand and intertwined it in his as you head to Florean Fortescue's for ice cream.
"Oh that's just perfect." You mutter sarcastically as you spot the obnoxious group of Gryffindors at a large table. Jack Hemmings' eyes narrow as he spots you, but you roll your eyes until they lock onto Luke's. You didn't know what to say to him, you're not even sure you want to say anything.
"Well, well, Y/l/n, I see you haven't been to Madame Primpernelle's. You should go soon though, looks like your warts are coming in again." Jack says from the corner. Everyone laughed at her table, including Luke.
"Mind yourself, Hemmings." Blaise growls, his grip on your hand tightening slightly.
"Oh look at this! Got yourself a boyfriend, have you?" Jack laughs. You watch as everyone at his table sniggers or bellows in laughter. Everyone except for Luke, whose face was cold as he watched you, his lips set in a deep frown when his eyes went to yours and Blaise's locked hands.
"Just ignore him Blaise, he's just takin the piss on me." You say, forcibly turning Blaise to order your ice cream. He paid, despite your protests.
"So, Y/l/n, how is it in your home now that you know your father is a Death Eater?" Your whole body stiffens and your heart falls to the ground as the words left Jack's mouth. The whole parlor went silent and you stayed where you were, you didn't dare turn to look at him.
"I'll curl you apart, Hemmings." Blaise spits as he lets go of your hand, turns and starts towards Jack, this time you didn't try to stop him. Every meat head at the table stood, ready to fight Blaise.
"Out!" Mr. Fortescue's voice booms stopping Blaise from going any further. "I don't want no trouble in here. Out! The lot of you! Go on now!"
You catch Luke's eye and he looks almost apologetic, but you just shake your head as your face contorted in disgust. You grabbed Blaise's arm and tugged him slightly. "Let's go. They're not worth it."
"You're right, they're not worth it." He scoffs at them before following you out.
On the train you sat by Pansy and Daphne as the compared beautifying potions they had got earlier. You had to refrain from rolling your eyes when Pansy went on talking about how well Draco looks this year. She was just in the middle of admiring his hair when the train came to an abrupt stop, then the lights went out. You poked your head out of the door to find that many other students were doing the same.
"What was that?" Daphne asks.
"I don't know. I think maybe we've broken down." You say as you close the door and return to your seat. The cart goes cold suddenly, the window begins to freeze and you could see your breath in a cloud of mist as it left your mouth. Pansy sat there with eyes wide as she looked out the window.
"Th-there's something o-out there." She trembles, huddling close to Daphne. You see a dark figure fly passed the window, you admit you were also frightened, but you maintained your composure. Before long everything went back to normal and the train started moving again. Pansy swore she saw a bright light from the Gryffindor car. Later, you were informed that the figure was a dementor and it had attacked Potter.
After the first week, you flew onto the roof to watch the first years in their flying lesson, it's always fun watching them struggle.
"Having fun?" You heard Luke tease from behind you. You scoff and turn to face him.
"So you can be friendly when it's just me, but God forbid your housemates see you talking to me. Why, Hemmings, you've got a reputation to uphold." You say, gasping dramatically as you put your hand over your heart and giving him a sarcastic pout.
"S'Not that simple." He mutters, looking down as he played with some loose rocks with his foot.
"'Course it ain't." You scoff and push passed him.
"Wait. You were here first, I'll leave." He sighs.
"No need. I must be off anyways, I've got a study date with Blaise." You shrug.
"Zabini?" Luke's voice was surprised.
"The one and only." You smirk. "He's been very keen on asking me out this year, figured I might as well give it a go."
"You can't go out with him!" Luke shouts. You're taken aback by his sudden outburst.
"What's it to you anyways?" You ask.
"It's not." Luke shrugs, trying to maintain his "cool guy" demeanor.
"Good, I'll be going then." You say as you mount your broomstick.
"I'll walk you then." Luke says suddenly, mounting his own broomstick. You roll your eyes and push off the roof, flying until you reached the ground. You walked up several staircases and you finally arrived at the library where Blaise was waiting.
"Hemmings." Blaise says, surprised.
"Zabini." Luke spits. Blaise furrows his eyebrows, unsure of what else to say to Luke so he turns to you and smiles.
"You ready then, love?"
"Yes." You breathe, smiling at the Slytherin boy. You still don't know about Blaise, he's good for you, and your father would approve, but you just weren't really into him, not that way, so you told him. He took it well, saying you could be friends. That afternoon you got Draco to imitate the Bloody Baron and get Peeves the poltergeist to pelt the first years with walking sticks. You and Draco laughed hard as you watched from afar; all of them scramble around like ants trying to get away from Peeves.
"Hey! Woah!" You hear a voice call out. Percy Weasley, Gryffindor head boy comes out with a few younger Gryffindors, one of them being Luke. "Peeves, stop this nonsense before I get the Baron."
"Mr. Baron told me to do this." Peeves laughs as he throws more sticks at Luke and the others.
"Peeves!" The Baron's voice echoes in the corridor. You and Draco duck behind the wall as you watched Peeves get in trouble by your house ghost.
"I'm getting out of here before the Baron sees me, meet me in the great hall before class." Draco whispers to you before sneaking off. You got up to follow him when someone grabbed your arm, holding you back.
"That was you wasn't it?" Luke asks, his voice was hard and his face was angry.
"I don't know what you're talking about." You reply innocently.
"I know it was you and Draco. It wasn't funny." He says seriously.
"Was to me." You shrug.
"Someone could've gotten hurt." His voice angry, his eyebrows creasing as his frustration grew.
"Well no one did." You say before ripping your arm from his grasp. "Now back off, or I'll have Peeves go after you next."
"What's gotten into you?" He asks, exasperated.
"I could ask you the same question." You retort. Luke doesn't look you in the eye.
"Just leave the first years alone." He mumbles before walking away. You watch him walk away, grabbing your books and heading to the Great Hall where Malfoy, Goyle, and Crabbe were waiting for you.
"Can't believe they've got that oaf teaching this class." Malfoy growls. You roll your eyes as you get to Hagrid's hut. You follow Hagrid after he says he's got a real treat for you students, you enter the forest with the rest of your classmates. Your eyes widen when you see Hagrid standing there with a hippogriff which you learned was named Buckbeak. Hagrid, of course, had Harry Potter go first. Potter had earned it's trust and Hagrid had put Potter on it, despite his protests, and then the hippogriff broke into a run and leaped of the ground and into the sky, out of sight.
"Oh, please!" Draco says when Harry had landed, Draco roughly shoved passed everyone and strode towards Buckbeak. You would've stopped him, but you knew this was going to be good so you kept your mouth in an amused smile watching as the hippogriff reacted like any of its kind would and went up on its hind legs in defense, bringing them down on Draco. You stifled a laugh when Draco fell to the ground, holding his arm in pain.
"He's killed me! He's killed me!" Draco whimpered, rocking from side to side.
Hagrid breaks into a panic, "It's just a scratch-"
"Hagrid, he has to be taken to the hospital!" Granger shouts.
"Right." Hagrid says. He picks Draco up before calling over his shoulder, "Class dismissed."
You sat in the Great Hall with the group as Draco came in with his arm in a cast. Pansy gasped when she saw him which is when you decided you wanted to leave.
"Does it hurt terribly, Draco?" She coos. You roll your eyes as Draco makes up some elaborate story saying if Madam Pompfrey had waited a second more they'd had to of cut his arm off. You scoffed and walked out, overhearing that Sirius Black had been sighted in Dufftown
You had Defense Against the Dark Arts class with Professor Lupin next, you see Draco walking down the corridor with his arm in a sling.
"He's killed me, he's killed me!" You tease, imitating Draco's whines as you grab your arm, smirking at him as Blaise laughs along with you.
"Oh, shut up." Draco laughs, smirking back at you before going serious as he whips his head to someone behind you.
"Is something funny, Hemmings?" He asks in a threatening tone. You turn and watch as Luke's smile faded and he shakes his head before looking at the ground.
"Alright, children, today we are going to be working with Boggarts. Longbottom stand here." Professor Lupin orders. He gives you directions on how to defend yourselves and had Longbottom go first. "Alright, everyone, form a line."
Everyone rushed into a line, pushing you in front of Luke, as everyone pushed back and forth, Luke put his hands on your hips, trying to stabilize you. You gasp at the feeling, not wanting him let go, but remember how he's acted. Once settled, you push his hands off you and send him a glare of your shoulder before watching as a few people went, and then Potter went, his Boggart turned into a dementor. You stepped back into Luke, grabbing his hand as you watched the cloaked figure move closer to Potter. Professor Lupin quickly took care of it and dismissed the class. You walked away from Luke and walked out with Blaise like nothing happened. Later that night all students were forced to sleep in the Great Hall, once they found out that Sirius Black, escaped prisoner of Azkaban, was in the castle. The next day was when the trouble happened, you were walking to go ask Hagrid for some tutoring when Jack Hemmings grabbed you roughly and threw you against the wall outside the castle, pinning you to it so you couldn't escape.
"So it's true then? You father is a death eater? Saw that letter you sent my brother." Jack's smug sneers are taunting you, but in your current state all you felt like doing was crying, but you wouldn't let him see you at that point of weakness. "I bet you're just like him! You ready to kill a load of innocent people?"
You didn't answer him. Instead, you kept your face hard as your eyes shot daggers at him.
"Jack, mate, what're you doing?" You hear Luke's familiar voice ring out from behind Jack. You felt Jack's grip loosen and while you had the chance, you pushed him off of you and ran into the forest.
"Yeah! Run off like the coward you are!" Jack calls after you from the ground. You heard footsteps run after you and Jack screaming for Luke to come back.
"Y/n! Y/n, wait up!" You hear Luke yell, his long legs quickly catching up with you. You turned around first, him almost running into you.
"How could you?" You yell. "That letter wasn't meant for your stupid brother, hell, it wasn't even meant for you!"
"I know and I'm sorry! He opened it before I even got downstairs, I swear, I wouldn't ever let him read our private letters. You have to believe me, you know me." He pleads.
"No, I don't. I don't know who you are anymore, you act differently towards me, your definitely not the Luke I met in year one. You know, you're the one who said that friends don't treat friends like shit, but I guess that's okay because I don't even think we are friends anymore." You say, your voice cracking as tears threaten to fall. You tearing up, caused Luke's heart to clench. It was his fault, he had been such an asshole, following his brother's footsteps to please his family, and now when you needed him the most, it was too late. "I just found out my father isn't who he said he was, he is that horrible man in all those stories! I needed my friend and you laughed in my face! You made fun of me, you let your brother patronize and belittle me! You didn't try to defend me, you didn't even want to, did you?"
"Y/n, no, I-I..." He whispers, trailing off as he tried to find the words to say.
"Just leave me alone, Luke. I don't want to speak to." You sniff, wiping the tears.
"No, please." He tries.
"Just piss off." You whimper. You see Luke trying to reach out for you again, but before you could register what was happening, a big black dog came out from the brush and leaping at Luke, barking wildly as it chased Luke off. When he came back, he wasn't a dog anymore, he was a man, and not just any man at that. He wore prison clothes and his hair was long, he was filthy from head to toe.
"You," your eyes growing wide and gasping loudly as you backed away, "you're him! You're Siriu-"
He quickly covered your mouth with a very filthy hand, "Quiet!"
He must've sensed your fear, because a moment later he let go and takes a step back.
"I'm not going to hurt you." His voice was gentle as he held his arms up. You were still in shock as you braced yourself against the nearest tree.
"Not going to hurt me?" You ask bewildered. "You're notorious for mass murder and now you've escaped Azkaban, but you're not going to hurt me?"
"I suppose you wouldn't believe me if I told you that I was framed?" He inquires hopefully.
You look down, remembering how you've believed that excuse from your father's mouth your whole life. You bring your head to look up at the escaped convict and shake your head no.
Black sighs, but notices the troubled look on your face. "What's bothering you, child?"
"I..it's nothing. I shouldn't even be speaking to you." You say, coming back to reality.
"Was it that boy I chased off?" He asks quietly.
"Thanks for that by the way. But no, it's my father. He was framed for mass murder, much like you, he was accused for being a Death Eater. He was trialed and everything and came out innocent." You explain, sitting down, Sirius following to sit next to you at a comfortable distance. "But recently I've seen something that would prove otherwise. He...he has the mark."
"Who's your father?" Black asks, his voice still soft.
"Y/f/n Y/l/n." You reply. Sirius' whole body tenses as soon as the words left your mouth.
"You must be Y/n then." He says solemnly. You nod.
"Listen to me, your father, though a good man to you, is very dangerous. You must understand, your father has done terrible, terrible things to get to where he is. Many innocent people were killed or severely injured by his actions." Black explains, his tone was very grave. You look down in shame, not allowing the angry tears to start forming again.
"I've heard the stories. I've heard about what he's done, but I never sought to believe it. Even my mother told me all the stories were untrue." You say shaking your head, relieved that you could finally get all of this out.
"I suppose it's not that easy when someone as kindhearted as your mother marries someone as cruel as your father." He says. "You were only a baby when it happened, I'd expect nothing less than telling you the stories were lies. It kills a man's soul when your godson thinks of you as nothing but a traitor, a murderer, I can't imagine what it'd be like for my own child to think of me that way."
"Potter." You assume quietly.
"Yes."
"They said you murdered twelve muggles, and then that man, Patrick Pettigrew." You say, confused.
"Peter." Sirius corrected. "I was framed, and I know it's hard for you to accept given the circumstances, but you must believe me, Peter Pettigrew is still alive."
"And what about the Potters? You betrayed them." You add, more of a question than anything.
"Again, Peter had betrayed them, gave them up to You-Know-Who. In a form of rage I went after him, too blinded by my need to avenge the Lily and James that I fell right into Pettigrew's trap." He explained.
You nod, you were still suspicious, but something told you he was telling the truth. "I believe you."
Sirius gives you a small smile and a curt nod.
"It turns out my father is exactly who everyone thinks he is, but you're the exact opposite of who everyone thinks you are." You let out a dry laugh.
"Don't you think on it too much, child. He is, after all, still your father." He says, letting his lips set a sad, but reassuring smile.
You mirrored his smile, "Thank you, Sirius, honestly. I really needed this. I owe you one."
"Well, I know this is going to be a bit mad, but I do need your help with getting into the castle."
You looked at him, skeptically, "What for? Potter?"
"No, of course not. I need the red haired one's rat, and I can only do that if I have the Gryffindor common room password."He answers.
"I can get it for you." You smirk.
Now it's Sirius' turn to give you a skeptical look. "How?"
"Longbotton always makes a list of the weeks passwords. I can get it to you, easy." You nod. He gives you a quick smile before standing up.
"Well, you best be off. These woods are dangerous, especially when night falls." He says, helping you up.
"Thanks again, Siriu-" You stop when you realize he's gone. The corners of your mouth turn up slightly before you walk quickly back to the castle and manage to slip in unnoticed. At least until you were further in.
"Y/n! Thank God you're alright! I was so worried." Luke exclaims as you enter the castle. You roll your eyes and ignore him.
"Stay away from me." You say simply before walking back to your common room. The next day in your Defence class, you were sat next to Blaise, making sure you were directly behind Neville. Snape walks in and puts a projector on. He explains that Professor Lupin was unable to teach class today and turns the lights down. While everyone's attention was on Snape as he chastised Granger, you took it as an opportunity to sneak behind Longbottom and discreetly slip the paper from in between his books. You folded it and placed it in your pocket before hearing someone clear their throat from the desk next to you. You hadn't even noticed Luke sitting there, but he was giving you a questioning look which you ignored and turned your attention back to the lesson.
"What are you doing with Longbottom's list?" Luke asked in a hushed voice as you walk out of the classroom.
"S'none of your business." You state simply.
"What are you going to do with it?" He pushed.
"Mind your business, Hemmings." You growl walking a bit faster.
"No, not until you tell me wh-"
"It's for a friend, okay?" You cut him off, rolling your eyes before walking away. You know he means well, you knew Luke wasn't like his brother, you know he was only trying to impress Jack and his friends, you know he regrets letting Jack say those things to you, but you can't bring yourself to forgive him just yet, you don't want to just let it go. You were able to slip away and sneak into the forest. You whistled like you were calling a dog, you didn't know how else to call him, you didn't want to just scream out his name, in case of any dementors lurking nearby. Soon, the dog came out and you put the paper on the floor in front of him.
"Now we're even." You say, seeing the dog nod before you turned and walked back into the castle.
You decide to stay out of the drama for the rest of the school year. Before too long, you took your exams and got your grades, all good marks of course, and you were on the Hogwarts Express headed home. You exit the train and run through the wall, back to King's Cross.
"Y/n!" You hear Luke shout from behind you. You sigh and turn. He runs to get to where you are.
"What, Hemmings? You've got five seconds." You say.
"I just wanted to tell you to have a good summer and that I'll write you." He says, slightly panting.
"Is this some sort of joke?" You ask as you look over at Jack, seeing him eye you and Luke.
"No, of course not." Luke says, he looked a little hurt by your question.
"Then what do you want." You question.
"I wanted to apologize. I was the worst person to you this year, I've been trying to live up to my brother's expectations. The last thing I wanted to do was push you away, but I guess the way I acted did just that. And I know I don't deserve it, but do you think you could ever forgive me?" He asked, biting his lip. You smile and with the most courage you can muster, you press up on your tiptoes and kiss him on the cheek and wrap your arms around him, feeling his arms slide around you as he hugged you back.
"I think it can be arranged." You smile as you pull away, watching as Luke's cheeks turn red.
"Well I think we should probably hang out this break, none of that ignoring each other rubbish." He says solemnly.
"I will drag you out of your house by your ears if I must." You joke. You see you father in standing, waiting for you and your breath hitched. "I h-have to go now. I'll see you soon."
"I'll see you." Luke mumbles as you past him. You were a little scared to go back with your father, but you remembered what Sirius had said to you. He is still your father after all, still the same man he has been all your life and he wouldn't do a thing to hurt you.
"Hello, dear." He says cheerfully, wrapping his arms around you in a tight hug.
"Father." You say, smiling slightly. Your father looks at you suspiciously before nodding his head in Luke's direction. "Who's that?"
"Oh that's Luke." You answer.
"He a Slytherin?" He asked, giving him an onceover.
"Um, no sir. He's a Gryffindor." Your father's gaze snaps back to you and your breath gets caught in your throat.
"We'll talk when we get home." He says, sending you an angry glare before walking towards the exit. "Come, Y/n."
"Yes sir." You reply, walking after him. You look back at Luke as you walk and he was already looking at you with a worried look. You look forward and follow your father, this will be one hell of a conversation when you get home.
