Caleb's POV

After Philip had slammed the door shut, I felt so angry at myself! But yet nothing was really my fault, was it? But one thing in particular stood out, I had lied. I had lied to the love of my life and to her family! I had to set things straight, but I waited till she came to me first. I couldn't bring myself to bring it up on my own...

So I took to the balcony outside my room. I stood outside gripping my sleeves in anger. The tears running down my red face, the lines growing more visible. I was cold because of the midnight air, but I didn't care. I probably deserved to get sick, die, whatever comes to me. I was a horrible brother, a horrible future son-in-law, and a horrible partner. I sulked in silence with Flapjack perched beside me, then I heard the balcony door open and felt a soft and fuzzy blanket cover my shoulder. Catherine.

Her hands stayed on my shoulder, rubbing my arm to get it warm. Her hair was up in a bun, a blanket draped over herself and Opal perched at her shoulder. "It's chilly, I don't want you to get sick."

I hung my head lower, Catherine could tell something was wrong, and Flapjack and Opal were chirping to each other, worried. "Sweetheart, are you alright?"

"Go back inside," I said.

"Not when you clearly have something on your heart that is bothering you. I won't force you to talk, but I also won't leave your side until you're ready to, and if it takes all night." Catherine started getting serious.

"Catherine, please!" I insisted.

"No, I'm staying here!" Catherine replied. She reached for my shoulder, but I held a hand up in front to block her.

"Don't! For your own good, please just go!" I said, turning away.

"My own good?" Catherine asked. "Caleb, my own good would be when my betrothed exchanges his frown and worried look for a smile."

I tried to push it away, I didn't want to push her away, but I couldn't tell her. "No, you don't understand! Stop caring about me! Stop being around me! Stop... Stop loving me. You're making a mistake!"

"What are you even talking about? What happened? Just an hour ago everything was fine!" Catherine cried.

I covered my ears, her voice ringing in my ears. I felt like I was drowning, the guilt taking me further into the ocean waves of feeling. "Caleb?"

My eyes started to sting again, I began to start crying harder. "Caleb?"

I started shaking. I was frightened. I was about to burst. "I lied!"

Silence.

"I lied to you and your parents and everyone else! I'm not who you think I am!" I shrieked. My shivering was uncontrollable. My tears were waterfalls. Catherine had taken a step back.

Alright, I'm gonna have to tell her... "Truth is, I'm not a witch. Neither is Philip. We're humans. We're not from the other side of this world like I had told you. We're from a whole other realm! A world without magic, a world where magic, demons, witches, and everything that makes out the Boiling Isles are seen as evil. As creatures not worth living."

"My kind hates yours. My kind hunts yours. We're taught to hate you! We're taught it's alright to kill anybody who even might have anything to do with magic or witchcraft!" I paused for a second. "We hang them."

Catherine's eyes went wide in terror.

"Philip and I saw those events multiple times. We made fun of it, made it a game. We didn't care they were dying. Nobody cared!" Out of the corner of my eye, Catherine held her hand close to her neck, envisioning that noose around her neck.
