A/n: Fluff into an angsty spiral

Caleb's POV

First step of being Engaged: get engaged to the most lovely person in the world, completed. Now, the next step: telling people. Catherine wanted to keep it a secret that we were engaged from her parents for a few weeks at least. I agreed not wanting to rush things, plus her mother knowingly has a big mouth about these kinds of things and willingly admits of spilling beans often.

I just didn't want to tell Philip, knowing how he still felt about Catherine. But I just hoped he'd listen to our little chat about opening his mind a bit more. A few weeks had gone by and it was a late evening. We were telling lots of family stories to each other, mainly ones about Mr. Clawthorne when he was much younger trying to impress Mrs. Clawthorne before they became a pair.

"... and then Andrew, in an attempt to woo me, tripped and took the entire buffet with him to the floor!" Mrs. Clawthorne explained.

We all laughed and giggled. Catherine snuggled closer into my sides while we had been sitting on my lap in the comfy chair in the corner. "That surely is a way to have a girl fall in love with you, Mr. Clawthorne," I remarked.

"Well, it worked! Almost thirty years later, I'm happily married with that same girl and we have a lovely daughter. I wouldn't recommend you to try that out though. No guarantee it works," Mr. Clawthrone chuckled.

"Hmm," Mrs. Clawthorne lovingly side-eyed her husband.

"I think that's not necessary anymore," I squeezed Catherine closer.

"Oh, young love! It's so sweet and beautiful. I remember my first love," Mrs. Clawthorne said.

"Mr. Clawthorne?" I asked.

"Oh no, he's number three," Mrs. Clawthorne smiled.

"She had quite the number of witches running after her. Rightfully so," Mr. Clawthorne remembered. "Of course, nothing else to be expected from the Boiling Isles' once most beautiful."

"Once?" Mrs. Clawthorne questioned. "You gifted your heart to another?"

"Why yes, I'd thought you'd know by now," Mr. Clawthorne replied.

"Oh, such agony! Who is this mysterious woman?" Mrs. Clawthorne fake whined.

"Our daughter!" Mr. Clawthorne's voice faded out as he and Catherine's mother went back into the kitchen.

Catherine leaned closer to me still watching her father. "Are you sure you want to be a part of this family?" She whispered.

"I've never been more sure about anything in my life," I whispered back.

"What are you two whispering about? Making fun of us?" Mrs. Clawthorne spoke up coming back.

"No..." Catherine dragged out. "But, Caleb and I actually have something to tell you."

Both of Catherine's parents' eyes lit up and they both scrunched up and got super giddy. "Oh, I know that sentence! This better be good news!" Mrs. Clawthorne exclaimed.

"Do you want to say it?" Catherine asked almost in a whisper.

"Uh..." I cleared my throat. Okay, we are actually doing this! I'm doing this, I am telling them. I will ask Mr. Clawthorne for his blessing and then I can stop this internal panic that everybody is listening to.

"Mr. Clawthorne, Mrs. Clawthorne, as you know Catherine and I have been a pair for some while now and it may be a bit quick but we both have made up our minds about this and there is no other way for us." I told. "My question is actually directed more towards you, Mr. Clawthorne. I guess your answer is clear already, but for the sake of tradition..."
