Dmitri
After seeing Sky last night at her house, I went to bed and ended up lying there for hours. Unable to sleep. At around three in the morning, I eventually got up and completed the day's paperwork. I needed to see her in person again. I needed to meet her. Seeing her at her house had done nothing to cure my obsession. Amplifying it is what it did.
Somehow I convinced Ivan that we had to gain the favor of the locals and that the best way of doing that was by going around and introducing ourselves. A weak story, but it was all I could come up with. As we were still awaiting the file on Sky, which was supposedly going to be handed over today by the Sheriff, I suggested we start there. See for ourselves if she is a threat.
Disbelief was written all over Ivan's smirking face at this suggestion, but he didn't dare question me, and the next thing I knew, I was standing in front of Sky's store, Sky's Naturals. Fuck, she wasn't inside. I could smell another scent in there, a werewolf scent, but hers was faint, indicating her lack of presence. As Ivan comes sauntering up behind me, I hear a ragged breath leave his mouth before he inhales sharply.
He pushes open the door, which makes a small ting sound to acknowledge someone has entered, and his eyes land on the only other person in the shop. The woman spritzing water on the plants whips around, her eyes locking onto Ivan.
In my numerous years alive, I have witnessed many bindings, which all go the same. I don't know the feeling personally, as I have never experienced binding with anyone, but I know how it goes. And these two will be no different.
She places the spritzing bottle down as they walk up to each other. Like magnets, the attraction is immediate. Ivan holds out his hand, and she takes it. Their gaze goes to their joined hands, probably reveling in the feeling of sparks where skin touches skin. All werewolves and Lycans are taught about the binding process when they are young, along with the history of the races. For Lycans and their heightened senses, the process is apparently more intense.
"Ivan," he says, looking back at her adoringly.
"Rene," she offers in return, her eyes still locked onto his.
Wow, I don't know if I can stomach watching this much longer. It's pretty torturous.
"Rene, do you know who I am?" I ask her, bringing her attention abruptly back to reality.
"Alpha Dmitri Makarov of the White Claw pack." Her voice is quiet, and her stance morphs from intense to submissive as she looks at me.
"What are you doing here in this town, in this shop? Which pack are you from?" My tone is full of authority, needing her to understand her predicament. She needs to answer truthfully to avoid being taken in for questioning, which is not something I want to do with her being Ivan's mate. For Ivan's sake, I hope she is not working with Hunters.
Before she can answer, I hear a bicycle pull up to the front of the store. Then I smell her. Sky. Spicy and sweet, with a faint undertone of rose. Without turning, I can tell she has climbed off the bicycle and placed it against the wall. She reaches the door, but instead of entering, she pauses. Her heart rate accelerates. She's nervous.
"Skylar's here. Before she comes in, does she know? About you? About us?" I ask Rene quickly in a lowered voice.
"No. She doesn't know about me, and I don't think she knows what we are. The residents here don't really talk to her like that, and she hasn't been here long enough to find out," she says quickly in a whisper.
"Tell her we're new to the town and here to introduce ourselves to the locals," I hiss out quickly.
I hear the ting of the doorbell, and then I am overwhelmed with the full force of her scent that hits me as a breeze drifts in from behind her. I can't get over how affected I am by it. I feel drawn to her.
We all turn to look at her as she steps in. She looks at Rene first, then Ivan, and then she locks eyes with me—big, beautiful hazel doe eyes. In the light of day, I can see that while most of her eye color is hazel, there is a thin section around the edge where it blends into a light green. It's truly mesmerizing. My heart skips a beat at the same time hers does. I can sense Ivan and Rene picking up on this interaction. They can hear heartbeats as well as I can.
She is embarrassed and uneasy, her pink cheeks giving her away. Mind-linking Ivan, I tell him to stop looking at her, hoping it will help put her at ease. I don't need to ask him twice as he returns his loving gaze to Rene.
Sky is gorgeous. Her beautiful red hair and locs are in her trademark messy bun on top of her head, with tendrils escaping around the sides, just like I remember last night. She is wearing a sleeveless black top with a Tree of Life symbol on the front. It hugs her breasts and waist before disappearing into a figure-hugging pair of old Levi jeans with a splotch of faded white paint on the bottom left pants leg. The ensemble finished with a pair of Vans. She is effortlessly beautiful, and you can see she is wholeheartedly unaware of just how gorgeous she is.
I stare at her makeup-free, faintly freckled face as her focus moves from my eyes to my nose and then lingers on my lips. Her tongue flicks out to wet her lips. Fuck. Such an unconscious action on her part is having a very real reaction on my part. A vision of her lips on mine flashes through my mind, and I can feel my body heat up, blood rushing to places. As it has been for days since I scented her in the diner.
Her eyes travel from my mouth down my chest and carry on all the way down to my feet. She moves her gaze to her feet, a little smile on her face.
Not bothering to avert my gaze, I continue staring at her when Rene asks her if she is okay, inwardly smirking at her response about having a moment. She was having a moment checking me out. That's what that was.
Rene explains the reason for our visit, and I see the curiosity in her eyes at Ivan and Rene's proximity.
Seizing the opportunity to touch her, I hold out my hand to shake hers. She steps forward, and as her hand touches mine, there is a small jolt of electricity where our skin touches. I mask my surprise, writing it off as a little bit of static electricity.
She pulls her hand back fleetingly, apologizing before grasping my much larger hand again. Tingles erupt at every place our skin meets. It can't be. Binding. It's an impossibility. It must be something else.
"I'm Skylar, but everyone calls me Sky," she says, smiling the most beautiful smile I've probably ever seen, flashing perfect white teeth. I would be calling her Skylar then, considering I'm not everybody.
"Dmitri," I say in return, continuing to hold her tiny hand in mine. She glances over at Rene and then back to me. She is as confused as me about what is happening here. I let go of her hand, needing to leave.
"Ivan, time to go," I instruct before moving past her and exiting the shop that has suddenly become too small for me. I need to go for a run. The animal inside me wants out.
Part of me wanted to understand what was pulling me to her, but the other part was saying it was impossible, so why bother? I wasn't sure which part would win.
