Dmitri
I was having a hard time reigning my Lycan in. When I heard another man on the phone with Sky, and calling her Skylar no less, I immediately saw red. No one but me calls her that, the audacity of the caller causing anger to shoot to the surface. And then, when I heard him ask when they were meeting, it was nearly the end of all restraint I had. I knew I should leave and give Sky privacy, give myself a chance to calm down, but I couldn't—intrigue at what was being said overriding any logic.
Chris. Just thinking his name sent my Lycan into a frenzy. I wanted to tear him apart. Rip him to pieces. Wear his carcass as a fucking hat. I would call Kira and ask her to investigate him.
"What are you saying? What does 'mine' even mean?" Skylar pulls my focus back to the present. I didn't even realize my Lycan had voiced his possessiveness. And we hadn't yet had a chance to discuss this feeling between us. The possibility that it could be binding. I was admittedly as confused by my slipping control as she was.
"I'm sorry, Skylar. My Lycan feels very...protective of you," I say, trying to keep the anger out of my tone.
"Well, Chris is no threat. I have a life that involves me talking to people. Sometimes those people are men," she says flatly.
I can't understand why she can't see what I am feeling for her. And why she doesn't feel the same way. I have no claim over her. No right to be jealous. Yet every fiber in my body screamed for me to declare her as my own. To fully bind with this human, true mate or not. A part of me wished that if my true mate were anyone other than Sky, they would never find me.
"We need to talk about what is happening between us, Skylar." I watch for her reaction, a flicker of sadness crossing her features before it vanishes.
"I know I'm a duty to you, Dmitri, a burden you have been lumped with because of the agreement to protect the town." The words come out quietly, but there is hurt in her voice.
"It's more than that, Skylar, and you know it. You feel it," I say, stepping towards her, my Lycan finally pushing into the recesses slightly.
I touch her arm, the tingles erupting where our skin meets. She looks down, her expression one of confusion.
"You can feel that. It's real. It's supposed to be impossible with a human, but we might be binding, which happens between werewolves and Lycans when they find their soul mate."
"How is it possible with me then?" she asks, her hazel eyes full of questions... and disbelief.
"Well, humans cannot scent us, but you can. The fact that you can see scents might make this different." My hand moves up her arm to cup her neck, her eyes closing briefly at the touch.
Her eyes opened again, full of longing. "I'm falling in love with you, Skylar." The words, once out, hang in the air heavily. At the same time, I feel lighter than I have since meeting her. I can no longer deny the feelings I have. I no longer want to.
Her hazel eyes are wide, filled with surprise. "You're falling in love with me? Human me? This?" she indicates to herself as she steps back—our contact breaking.
"Yes, Skylar. You. As you are." I wasn't expecting this reaction, but then I never knew what to expect from this enigma of a woman.
"It's impossible. I mean. Have you seen your female species? They are stunning. And also, are you not just confusing this feeling with duty?" She is rambling on, seemingly unable to comprehend my words as truth.
"I know how I feel, Skylar." Part of me was hoping that she felt the same way. But I had to consider that she, potentially, was not falling for me as I was for her.
"Look, you don't have to feel the same way, just know I am here for you. I will be here for you as long as you need." I can't help the hurt from coating my tone as the pain of my feelings not being reciprocated bubbles through my veins. I had never felt like this before.
She looks at me, shocked. "I'm just surprised, Dmitri. I never thought in a million years you would feel the same way about me that I do for you. I'm falling in love with you." The words spill out of her beautiful lips and take a moment to penetrate the hurt I feel. Hurt, which is quickly morphing into elation. She feels the same.
A smile creeps onto my face. Eliciting a similar reaction from Sky. Part of me wonders if this is how humans feel all the time, emotions changing from moment to moment. It's a little perplexing. But this woman does draw out emotions in me quicker than anyone else, so I suppose it's to be expected.
I take a step forward, pulling her into my arms. My hands cup the back of her neck as I pull her in for a kiss. Our lips touch, and I'm overwhelmed by a feeling of completeness. Our mouths explore, tongues fighting passionately as our bodies respond. I put my hand around her waist, lifting her as her legs snake around my hips. Our lips part as we silently acknowledge the need to breathe. Sky's lips are swollen and red from our kissing, and her cheeks are flushed with excitement. As I am about to capture her lips again, a loud banging echoes through the villa. The fucking front door. Whoever was out there better have a good reason.
I groan out in frustration. "Let me check who it is," I say to Sky, her legs unwrapping from around me as she steadies herself on the ground.
I pull the door open with such force I nearly pull it off the hinges. The smartly dressed werewolf steps back and lowers his head in submission.
"This better be good," I say curtly.
"S-sorry, sir. I'm here to collect you for your flight back." The werewolf stoops lower, fear emanating from his body.
"Fuck, I forgot," I say, running a hand over my face in frustration.
I made this arrangement two days ago and completely forgot about it. Arrangements that couldn't be changed as I had a meeting with the High Council late tomorrow. I wanted to take that opportunity to see how much they knew about Sky and to ease any concerns they have, if any, about her having connections to the Hunters.
"Call the airport and tell them to delay by an hour. We will be ready shortly." I close the door, and as I turn around, Sky is standing there, a look of amusement on her face.
"Geez, you nearly took that poor guy's head off," she chuckles. "I overheard your conversation. We need to start packing then?"
"I'm sorry, Skylar. I would love to stay here with you longer, but I have an important meeting tomorrow."
She laughs at the frustration that is clearly oozing out of me. "Don't worry. I understand, Dmitri. I could do with getting back to some sort of normalcy, so really, no apology needed."
I hug her tightly before we head off to start packing. My mind wanders to how it will be when we return as we go back to what we were doing before. Everything feels different now.
One thing I was sure about, though, was that our lives would never be the same again.
