Dmitri

"You knew they were coming." I level Andrea with a look that would have anyone else cowering in submission. I was ready to rip his limbs off. He just smiles and sips his whiskey.

"You realize you put everyone in this tent in danger. I nearly lost control back there. That would be on you," I say, running a hand through my hair, the anger coursing through my veins threatening to erupt into a bloodthirsty Lycan.

"You need to see her. Things are not finished between the two of you," he says thoughtfully, putting his drink down.

"I can see how this is eating you up. It's time to finish it properly so you can move on. For your sake and the sake of your pack. As an Elder now, I cannot continue to shield you. I have a moral obligation, and if there is a repeat of what happened months ago, I won't be able to hide it. I'm doing this for you, Dmitri. You need to learn to control yourself again." He puts a hand on my shoulder.

His words make sense, and if the other Elders found out what he did for me those months ago, he would probably be in insurmountable trouble. I am an Alpha, after all. I have a responsibility to my pack.

The anger towards him dissipates slightly, but the vision of Sky's arm linked with Chris threatens to bring the simmer to a boil.

"I need some air." I turn around, catching Savannah's eye as I do. She promptly returned to the table she came from after Sky and Chris left. I could tell she was angry. She knew that I was affected by my encounter with Sky, and she hated it. I avert my gaze and head towards an exit at the rear of the tent, close to the bathrooms, which leads out into the garden. Ivan and Kira are standing off to the side, Kira's back to me.

"Just leave it, Kira. Telling Dmitri might make things worse," I hear Ivan say before he stiffens. His eyes dart to mine. I walk towards him as Kira turns to face me. "Tell me what?" I ask, my tone demanding an explanation.

Kira looks at Ivan, who shakes his head slightly before she steps forward. "It's about Sky." I stiffen. Did I really want to know? What information would Kira deem important enough for me to be told? While a part of me was battling with my need to know or not, another, apparently overriding part knew that not knowing was not an option. "Just spit it out, Kira." They both knew how important Sky was to me, probably why Kira thought this information needed to be relayed.

"There's something wrong with her." My heart jumps, a fact I am well aware both of them can hear. Kira looks at Ivan before continuing.

"I was in the bathroom, and I heard her stifle a sort of scream. Like she is in pain. I could see something was wrong when she came out, but she assured me she was fine. My instinct is telling me otherwise. Something is seriously wrong with her." Kira looks disturbed. And I feel disturbed. But this is none of my business. I need to start letting go. "This has nothing to do with me anymore. Go check on Savannah and make sure she keeps out of trouble."

They give me a nod before walking off in the direction I came from. I stand rooted to the spot as the very person we have been discussing comes into view. Sky is standing at a table with Chris. A smile on her face as she shoos him off. As soon as he is out of sight, I see the smile she was holding earlier fade so quickly you would never guess it was there. When I saw her earlier, she looked gorgeous as ever. My heart stirred at the very sight of her. But now, seeing her like this and with what Kira had just said, things were becoming apparent.

Her hair is neatly styled into a braid that falls down her back. The usual beads and jewels not adorning her locs. Her face looks thinner, and her cheeks seem sunken in. Her eyes, while still beautiful, lacked their usual spark. I couldn't be sure, but it looks like she has lost weight. Her gorgeous maroon dress has long billowing sleeves that are cinched at her wrists. The neckline is high, with lace all along the top up to her neck. The style of the dress is loose, with no part hugging her figure, and it is long, all the way to the ground, covering her feet, making it difficult to tell if her weight loss is real or imagined. The dress is lovely but a little bit of a strange choice, considering it is quite a warm evening.

She starts walking towards some secluded tables at the back of the tent. I follow at a distance, unable to tear my gaze away from her. On her way, a man accidentally steps backward, causing Sky to bump into his elbow lightly. She continues walking but is stiff as she cups her left side. She makes it to her destination, a high table in a dimly lit area off to the side with a couple of chairs around it. She perches on the edge of the chair, her elbows on the table. She drops her head into her hands.

I can't help myself. I make my way to the table. She doesn't sense me as I approach. I stand there looking at the woman who stole my heart. This human who holds so much power over me. Even now, when she doesn't want me. When she just left.

I clear my throat.

Her head snaps up, and her mask quickly emerges, a beautiful blank canvas staring back at me. Her hands move under the table as she plasters a fake smile on her face. I knew Sky's real smile, and this was not it. She may be able to fool that douchbag calling himself her boyfriend, but she couldn't fool me.

"Dmitri, so nice to see you again. It's been a while." I can hardly believe this is the same person from a year ago. Everything about her is wrong. The way she looks, the way she is acting. It all seems off.

"Yes, it has been a while. Why don't we have a dance Skylar, for old times' sake." Her mask falters for a split second as she processes my request.

"I don't think that would be a good idea, Dmitri. Chris will be back soon. And what about Savannah?" I can see her grasping at excuses as her hand unconsciously cups her side under the table.

"It will be fine. We all know where we stand, so what harm can come from one dance? I insist." Not waiting for another excuse, I hold my hand out expectantly.
